Randwick hosts another major spring program on Saturday, headlined by the $2 million Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m for the three-year-olds.
The supporting card has plenty of depth, with The Invitation, Craven Plate, Five Diamonds Prelude and Callander-Presnell among the features, while the Kirkham Plate opens proceedings with several promising two-year-olds making their first race-day appearances.
Randwick Tips October 24
Race 1 - Arrowfield Kirkham Plate Tips (1000m)
The late market should tell more of the story with these youngsters in the Randwick opener, although early betting has understandably leaned towards 6. Royal Accord.
The Team Hawkes-trained colt has been the pick of these at the trials, backing up an October 2 Rosehill 900m heat win with another victory over 818m at Warwick Farm on October 13.
A strong, forward two-year-old by Home Affairs, who was the Champion Australian First Season Sire for 2025/26, he comes from the same family as champion sprinter Black Caviar, while Tyler Schiller has been aboard in both public hit-outs.
12. Jenni In Rome has looked relatively straightforward in two public trials for Richard and Will Freedman.
She led throughout to win her first at Warwick Farm before being held together by Jason Collett in her October 19 Rosehill hit-out.
4. Luce Pariston is one of the outsiders but has shown ability despite looking raw in both trials. He will improve from this but may have more claims than the market suggests.
13. Rosarito responded when asked to win her latest Warwick Farm hit-out and looks another capable of featuring on debut.
Selections: 6-12-4-13
Race 2 - TAB Highway Handicap Tips (1600m)
Scone trainer Lou Mary continues to produce strong results from a small team, with two winners and three placings from 10 starters in October after two wins and six placings from 16 runners in September.
He prepares 15. Roses Imminente, who looks worth an each-way play after catching the eye when second at Muswellbrook on October 5 and producing the fastest final 200m of that 1450m event.
The winner Wandjad subsequently franked the form by winning again at Muswellbrook on October 19 to complete a hat-trick, while Roses Imminente carries 54kg here, 3kg less than in both of her first two runs this preparation.
4. Bluish Hue commands respect after ending a sequence of three consecutive seconds with a Highway victory at Rosehill over 1500m on September 26.
He draws barrier two for Nash Rawiller, carries only 0.5kg more and gives every indication the rise to the mile will suit.
2. Olympian was one-paced when third first-up at Newcastle on October 3 but remains lightly raced and boasts useful three-year-old form, including consecutive wins in March before an unlucky fourth in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes.
7. Ocean Tsunami had little go right when fifth as favourite at Rosehill on October 10 and deserves another chance after a good three-year-old season.
Selections: 15-4-2-7
Race 3 - Midway Handicap Tips (1200m)
A very competitive Midway sees plenty of chances, but 5. Maidoff arrives in excellent form after consecutive wins, with plenty of merit in the latest after working early and still providing a late kick with 60kg.
The Clarry Conners-trained four-year-old has found another level this preparation and now gets Nash Rawiller aboard.
Barrier eight gives him enough options in a race containing plenty of speed and he looks ready for the step into Midway company.
12. Smoke ’N’ Darts is aiming for a hat-trick and his early price looks generous.
He improved throughout his first preparation and returned with another victory over 1000m, while the rise back to 1200m suits and he drops 3kg from that first-up assignment.
14. Lawless Lucy has raced only five times for two wins and made an impressive return this preparation, making light work of a talented Slander. She carries 4.5kg less second-up.
16. Common Goal comes into calculations off two quiet trials if the second emergency gains a start. His only major failure last campaign came in stronger company.
Selections: 5-12-14-16
Race 4 - ALM On-Premise Brian Crowley Stakes Tips (1200m)
1. Crescent King showed early promise in a two-run first preparation and has returned a much stronger colt this spring.
The Peter Snowden-trained three-year-old landed good support to win a Canterbury Super Maiden first-up before improving again at Warwick Farm on October 5.
He carried 60kg there and defeated Fovea comfortably, while the reduced field should allow Tim Clark to give him every opportunity in what may become a tactical Listed contest.
5. Ciaron’s Star brings the strongest juvenile form, having finished third in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes at Randwick in April before returning with a second to Blue Door in the Heritage Stakes.
She has since won a Warwick Farm trial on October 13 and looks ready to run well again.
8. Revolina was an impressive Hawkesbury debut winner on October 8, saluting as an even-money favourite while still doing a few things wrong.
2. Punxsutawney Phil is unbeaten from three starts across 1100m, 1150m and 1250m and remains difficult to knock despite the rise to Listed company.
Selections: 1-5-8-2
Race 5 - MyPlates Callander-Presnell Tips (1600m)
This is a difficult three-year-old race to line up, but 4. Why So Hard could be the runner with the most upside.
The obvious query is rising from 1200m to 1600m second-up, although his return in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes behind Satono Glow was hard to miss.
The Hawkes-trained colt recorded the fastest final 200m of the race and was a debut winner at Randwick in June, with the bigger circuit likely to suit even if the mile jump is unconventional.
5. Omolong won both starts during his winter campaign and improved significantly second-up when runner-up to Chuchichaschtli in the Tapp-Craig Stakes over 1400m on October 10.
He now draws barrier three for Kerrin McEvoy and the extra 200m looks worth exploring.
8. Harrybegood could be the value, with the Kris Lees-trained colt still learning but showing enough raw ability. The bigger track and step to 1600m look ideal now.
2. Central Europe brings the strongest recent feature-race exposure after contesting the Caulfield Guineas, although he is deep into his preparation and has done some travelling.
Selections: 4-5-8-2
Race 6 - Asahi Super Dry Craven Plate Tips (1800m)
2. Tom Kitten is not always the easiest horse to catch, but he owns the strongest weight-for-age credentials in the field.
The three-time Group 1 winner added another top-level victory in the All-Star Mile earlier this season, while his first Group 1 success came over 2000m at Randwick in the 2023 Spring Champion Stakes.
He has improved with each run this preparation and finished third in the Epsom Handicap last start, with the rise to 1800m looking suitable at this stage of his campaign.
1. Lindermann returned to form after failing in the Underwood Stakes, finishing second to Attrition in the Hill Stakes on October 10.
He is hard fit, has a strong record with Nash Rawiller and should again make his own luck on speed.
5. Plymouth was beaten just over two lengths first-up at Flemington before closing strongly at 100-1 in the Epsom Handicap, and the rise to 1800m looks a positive despite the tougher weight-for-age conditions.
8. Panova was fair first-up before having five weeks between runs in the Toorak Handicap, where she settled at the rear and was never involved, so a third-up spike would not surprise.
Selections: 2-1-5-8
Race 7 - Moët & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes Tips (2000m)
The progression of 8. Global Goal has been ideal, with the John Sargent-trained filly building through the Princess Series before producing a Group 1 breakthrough in the Flight Stakes.
She resumed with an encouraging third in the Silver Shadow Stakes before again finishing third in the Tea Rose Stakes, then relished the rise to 1600m when too strong for De Armas and Bangkok Hottie in the Flight Stakes.
That looks the standout form reference, with Bangkok Hottie having completed the Furious Stakes-Tea Rose Stakes double beforehand, while Global Goal continues to improve and barrier three gives Dylan Gibbons options tackling 2000m for the first time.
2. Cormier looks ready for the rise to 2000m after improving sharply third-up when fourth in the Gloaming Stakes over 1800m.
The son of Maurice finished only 0.39 lengths from Proxima Dea after racing on speed and kept finding when others quickened, while Aaron Bullock returns to the saddle.
9. Proxima Dea is unbeaten after four starts and arrives off victory in the Gloaming, where she was six weeks between runs. A sister to 2022 Queensland Oaks winner Gypsy Goddess, she is trained by David Payne, who is aiming for his third Spring Champion Stakes victory, having also prepared Montefilia in 2020, the last filly to win this Group 1.
7. Mindgames suffered his first defeat when runner-up at Newcastle over 1600m on October 17 and takes a major rise in class, but barrier one gives Tim Clark every opportunity to conserve ground and he does possess some X-factor.
Selections: 8-2-9-7
Race 8 - The Invitation Tips (1400m)
It had been a long time between wins for 9. Gerringong, but that drought ended with a brave victory in the Nivison Stakes on October 10.
The Blue Point mare has consistently produced strong form around this level, including a second in the Group 2 Dane Ripper during the winter and a runner-up finish to dual Group 1 winner Stefi Magnetica in last year's Invitation.
She should strip fitter second-up and now brings winning confidence into another major target.
1. Lazzura is the class runner after winning the Group 1 Coolmore Classic during the autumn and later finishing fourth in the Queen Of The Turf.
She returned in good order this spring and won the Golden Pendant at Rosehill on September 26, with a nice, quiet tick-over trial completed subsequently.
3. Verona Rose has the map to turn the tables on Lazzura and boasts an excellent 1400m record, including a Group 2 win over this track and distance in February.
4. Super Smink is the bolter, with her 10th behind Gerringong in the Nivison worth forgiving after little went right and improvement second-up expected.
Selections: 9-1-3-4
Race 9 - Five Diamonds Prelude Tips (1500m)
It is getting close to D-day for 1. Linebacker, with the Five Diamonds his obvious target third-up, while he has been aimed at much stronger races in previous campaigns.
The John O'Shea and Tom Charlton-trained gelding returned with a sound fourth in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie before improving again when third in the Alan Brown Stakes on October 10.
He settled ninth there and finished strongly behind Formal Display, while barrier two and regular rider Zac Lloyd are major positives as he approaches another peak.
12. Declichy Boulevard is not as well suited under the set-weights-and-penalties conditions but remains a talented mare and arrives off a luckless Epsom Handicap attempt on October 3.
She has won at Randwick carrying 59.5kg and has form across both good and wet ground.
9. Harry’s Yacht is worth including at odds now that he is hard fit and has previous clockwise experience. He hasn't had a race run to suit in three Melbourne outings this preparation, all of which have contained merit.
8. Brave One should also be fitter again after two runs back, with the latest over 1400m topping him off nicely. He is honest and brings solid Randwick statistics.
Selections: 1-12-9-8
Race 10 - Robrick Lodge Filante Handicap Tips (1600m)
1. Estadio Mestalla rises sharply in weight from the Alan Brown Stakes but is a proven weight carrier and looks well placed despite 61kg.
The Joseph Pride-trained eight-year-old has had three runs this preparation and improved into consecutive seconds, most recently finishing runner-up to Formal Display in the Alan Brown.
He does not win out of turn but remains genuine, draws barrier two for veteran Nash Rawiller and owns a strong record over the Randwick mile.
8. Zuleika is the intriguing runner at odds after showing potential during a three-year-old season that culminated with a staying victory over 2100m.
She drops to the 52kg minimum from barrier three and her first-up run over 1400m was much better than the finishing position suggests after settling in an impossible position.
2. Robusto had little go right when resuming in the Alan Brown Stakes, while his previous Randwick mile appearance produced a third behind Yorkshire and Estadio Mestalla. He is capable enough here.
6. Encap is not easy to catch, but firm ground suits and this looks a more appropriate assignment than several of the races he has contested recently.
