The $6 million Cox Plate at Flemington and $2 million Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick headline Saturday's October 24 racing, but there's plenty of value to be found away from the major features.
We've picked out five outsiders capable of upsetting the market across Flemington, Randwick, Eagle Farm, Morphettville and Ascot, with our Saturday Best Bets covering the leading selections from all five meetings.
Ascot Roughie Tip
Ascot Roughie - Race 10 No. 8 Rally The Troops
One poor run should not define Rally The Troops, particularly when there were genuine excuses for his seven-length defeat as favourite at Kalgoorlie on October 3.
The five-year-old was found to have mucus following the race and was slow to recover, while his first-up sixth at Belmont was much better than it reads after being badly held up at a crucial stage.
The return to 1400m is a major positive, with all six career wins coming over the distance, including consecutive metropolitan victories at Belmont and Ascot earlier this year.
Daniel and Ben Pearce have elected to press on third-up, and with four further placings from 16 attempts at the trip, there is little doubt the gelding is capable of producing a competitive performance.
Punters have understandably deserted Rally The Troops after Kalgoorlie, but his established form makes him a dangerous outsider at double-figure odds.
Eagle Farm Roughie Tip
Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 8 No. 6 Moonhaven
Wet weather could bring Moonhaven right back into calculations, with the six-year-old boasting an excellent record under testing conditions and returning from a short break following two encouraging trials.
His August 12 resumption at Eagle Farm had some merit despite finishing sixth, although a disappointing follow-up later that month suggested he was ready for another freshen-up.
The son of Shalaa has twice won over the Eagle Farm 1000m on rain-affected ground, while his Flemington success on a Heavy 8 surface in July 2024 provides further encouragement.
Four victories at the specialist sprint distance underline his suitability, and Saturday's conditions should give him every chance of recapturing the form that made him so effective earlier in the year.
Jace McMurray reunites with Moonhaven after partnering his latest victory in March, and with a lighter weight and preferred conditions, the gelding is capable of making his presence felt at generous odds.
Flemington Roughie Tip
Flemington Roughie - Race 9 No. 15 Chispa
Chispa looks significantly underestimated in the Flemington finale, particularly when comparing her price with stablemate Soverato, who heads the market despite finishing behind her during the Brisbane winter.
The Chris Waller-trained mare comfortably accounted for Soverato in The Roses before enduring a much tougher passage from a wide draw in the Queensland Oaks, where she finished behind that rival and returned with abrasions.
Her first-up performance offered little encouragement, but there was much more to like about her October 3 effort, finishing eighth of 17 after settling well back and repeatedly encountering trouble in the straight.
The daughter of Savabeel improved considerably as her previous preparation unfolded, suggesting she can take another step forward third-up with the benefit of two runs behind her.
With the rise towards 2000m firmly in her favour and stronger form than her current price suggests, Chispa looks an appealing outsider in the last at Flemington.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Morphettville Roughie - Race 4 No. 13 Image Artist
Image Artist is proving difficult to catch, but there is enough ability beneath her inconsistent performances to warrant another chance at a big price in Saturday's Class 1.
The daughter of Trapeze Artist was reluctant to muster early speed at Morphettville last weekend after five weeks between runs, although her previous third over 1100m was much more encouraging, producing the fastest closing sectionals in a race that has since supplied a winner.
Her maiden breakthrough came at Murray Bridge in August, while earlier juvenile performances included a stakes placing and appearances in Listed company, highlighting a level of ability that recent results have not fully reflected.
The quick seven-day turnaround is particularly interesting, with connections stepping Image Artist up to 1500m for the first time in what appears a suitable opportunity to explore her potential over longer distances.
There are few obvious standouts in this field, and if the additional distance helps her settle and finish strongly, Image Artist could be the one to surprise at generous odds.
Randwick Roughie Tip
Randwick Roughie - Race 2 No. 15 Roses Imminente
Roses Imminente brings an attractive form reference into Saturday's Randwick assignment, having caught the eye with a fast-finishing second at Muswellbrook on October 5.
The mare recorded the quickest final 200m of that 1450m contest, chasing home Wandjad, who subsequently returned to Muswellbrook on October 19 and completed a winning hat-trick.
Trainer Lou Mary continues to get excellent results from a small team, producing two winners and three placegetters from 10 starters in October after recording another two victories and six placings from 16 runners in September.
The four-year-old now drops to 54kg after carrying 57kg in both appearances this preparation, providing a useful advantage against Saturday's opposition.
With a strong recent form reference, a significant weight reduction and an in-form stable behind her, Roses Imminente looks an appealing each-way chance at a price.
