Wellington Phoenix are backed to defeat Central Coast Mariners in A-League Round 2, following an encouraging win over Melbourne Victory. Central Coast, who relied on two penalties for a draw last round, appear vulnerable away from home. Corban Piper is highlighted as a likely scorer and Oli Lavale is tipped to test the keeper. Key stats suggest both teams are likely to score, but Phoenix have the edge based on recent form and a favourable fixture list. The recommendation is for a home win with both teams netting.

Wellington Phoenix vs Central Coast Mariners A-League Round 2 Tips & Prediction

Wellington Phoenix are backed to prevail over Central Coast Mariners at home on Sunday in the A-League, with Corban Piper good value to get on the scoresheet and Oli Lavale tipped to work the keeper.

Backed by many to pick up the wooden spoon this season, the Nix have a great opportunity to pick up a maximum six points from their opening two rounds after seeing off Melbourne Victory last week.

It's an advantageous draw for Wellington, who play a second home game on the bounce.

Central Coast meanwhile needed two penalties to secure a 2-2 draw with an out-of-form Newcastle Jets in Gosford last week. It wasn't a convincing performance and their young squad looks vulnerable on the road here.

Phoenix aren't reliable either, so the Mariners can find the back of the net - Lavale looks the most likely if he starts striker again after firing off five shots in anger last week, including three on target.

Piper was arguably Wellington's best player last season and he started this campaign with a goal last week - at $4.00, he's a good shout to double down here.

Wellington Phoenix vs CC Mariners Head To Head

This will be the 53rd meeting between the pair, with the Nix holding a slight 21-19 advantage alongside 11 draws.

Wellington won the most-recent clash 3-1 at home last season.

Wellington Phoenix Form Analysis

After finishing in eighth spot last term, Phoenix got this season off to a confidence-boosting start by overcoming Australia Cup finalists Melbourne Victory 2-1 at home.

Piper headed home to put the Nix in front before Riley Bidois scored the winner just seconds after being introduced off the bench in the 77th minute.

“Delighted with the three points, proud of every one of the players, the staff and all the work that’s gone into this week," Phoenix manager Chris Greenacre said post-match.

The Nix were somewhat fortunate to come away with all three points after holding just 37 per cent of possession - Victory created four big chances, but were left to rue their missed opportunities.

Captain Alex Rufer should come back into the side after missing the win over Victory with illness.

Central Coast Mariners Form Analysis

It was a decent performance from the Mariners to open the season, securing a point in a 2-2 home draw with rivals Newcastle in the F3 derby.

Ali Auglah and Oli Lavale converted two penalties for Central Coast, but they couldn't hold onto their 2-1 lead deep into the second half, with Lavale turning from hero to villain, conceding an own goal.

“We’ve got a good foundation there from today,” manager John Hutchinson said post-match.
“Something we’ve been working really hard on … is their belief in possession. I want to make them grow and believe in possession, but yeah, they get a massive pass mark today.”

Central Coast Mariners Team News

Trent Sainsbury remains sidelined with injury, while Taiyo Hisamatsu is still awaiting visa clearance.

Central Coast Mariners Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): Andrew Redmayne, Lucas Mauragis, Noah McCann, Diesel Herrington, Storm Roux, Alexander Bolton, Chris Donnell, Haine Eames, Ali Auglah, Oliver Lavale, Bailey Brandtman
