Flemington hosts its first Group 1 of the spring on Saturday, September 12, with the Makybe Diva Stakes bringing a quality group of weight-for-age performers together over 1600m.

Sheza Alibi is the clear $1.50 favourite with BetRight after finishing runner-up to Autumn Glow first-up in the Winx Stakes at Randwick.

The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained mare was beaten fair and square that day, but her return still rated highly enough to have connections press on to the Makybe Diva Stakes, with Moody confirming she will take her place at Flemington.

Sir Delius is next at $5 and resumes as one of the most accomplished middle-distance horses in the country.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained entire won the Underwood Stakes and Turnbull Stakes last spring before adding the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick during the autumn, and he has been brought along steadily through his trials ahead of Saturday.

Mr Brightside is quoted at $8 after producing an excellent first-up second behind Beiwacht in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

The nine-year-old now returns to a race he has made his own, having won the past three editions of the Makybe Diva Stakes, and Lindsay Park believe his Memsie run has brought him on significantly for this assignment.

Aeliana is next at $11 and is set to step into the Flemington mile after another elite autumn campaign highlighted by Group 1 victories in the Ranvet Stakes and Tancred Stakes.

The Chris Waller-trained mare also finished runner-up in last year's Makybe Diva Stakes, giving her proven form in the race as she begins another campaign aimed at the major spring features.

Treasurethe Moment and Autumn Boy share the next line of betting at $15.

Treasurethe Moment resumed with a solid fourth in the Memsie Stakes behind Beiwacht, while Autumn Boy finished eighth in the same race after settling into his campaign at weight-for-age level.

Makybe Diva Stakes History

First run in 1948 as the Craiglee Stakes, the Makybe Diva Stakes has developed a strong history on the Melbourne racing calendar.

The race was originally contested over 2000m before being shortened to its current 1600m distance in 1965, while it was renamed in 2007 to honour three-time Melbourne Cup champion Makybe Diva.

The weight-for-age feature was elevated to Group 1 status in 2013, when the Chris Waller-trained Foreteller upset short-priced favourite Puissance de Lune.

Several high-quality gallopers have won the race, including Light Fingers, Dulcify, Mahogany, Northerly and Weekend Hussler.

Mr Brightside has dominated the most recent editions, completing a hat-trick of victories in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
