Belmont Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 3 Yamashita's Gold

Yamashita's Gold showed potential as both a two-year-old and early three-year-old when prepared by Gavin Bedggood in Victoria, having been stakes-placed on debut before winning a Sandown maiden over this distance early last season.

He later ran into smart galloper Point Barrow and, although he did not progress as hoped late in his three-year-old season, there were still some strong form references, including a third-up placing behind subsequent Sydney winner Perfect Pitcher before a heavily backed 1200m victory at Pakenham.

While his raw statistics may not necessarily show it, getting back onto firmer ground looks important in his third run for the Dylan Bairstow stable after he was heavily supported on August 27 but appeared not to get through the softer surface when third-of-six.

His stable debut three weeks earlier also had merit when he beat all bar Sesh, a fit galloper who has raced consistently throughout the winter.

Yamashita's Gold loses the apprentice claim but gains William Pike, and with the cutaway giving him options from off the speed, a firmer track and peak fitness can help the four-year-old bring up career win number three.

Belmont Best Bet - Race 6 No. 8 Cassandra

The William Pike and Williams combination has been one of the most formidable jockey-trainer partnerships in the country for some time and the past 12 months have been no exception, with Pike riding 58 winners for the yard at better than 30%.

One of those victories came aboard Cassandra at Pinjarra on August 20, when things did not go entirely to plan on debut after the daughter of Exceedance was slow away and left with a big task from the rear.

She circled the field in impressive fashion to win the 1300m maiden and recorded the fastest final 200m of the entire meeting in the process.

That form has since been well franked, with runner-up Rocktex placing behind smart galloper Raw Umber six days later before winning a three-year-old event at Belmont last Saturday.

A full sister to stakes winner Swiftfalcon, Cassandra should appreciate the extra 100m and, although less seasoned than her rivals, she clearly looks the runner with the most upside and is well placed to make it back-to-back wins.

Reliable Asset Maintenance Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Belmont Value Bet - Race 8 No. 4 Playing Around

With just 11 starts to his name, Playing Around remains very lightly raced for a six-year-old and has previously shown that he can produce a strong performance fresh.

His first run for the Stephen Miller yard at Pinjarra on February 22 was encouraging, making ground late over 1400m and recording the fastest final 200m of the race, while his 2025 return had produced a first-up Bunbury maiden win following a 12-month break.

He failed to progress through three subsequent Saturday assignments over varying distances last year and, in 2026, was spelled after a June 6 defeat when on the fresh side at just his second start for the stable.

His August 24 Lark Hill trial was better than it may read, with Playing Around held up during the 950m heat before finishing strongly, while the impressive winner of that heat placed at Belmont last Saturday.

Cassey Martinan was aboard for both that trial and his encouraging Pinjarra return earlier in the year, and in an open finale, Playing Around comes into calculations at a decent each-way quote if they're able to make ground.
