Wednesday's Sandown Hillside program features an extended 10-race card, highlighted by the rescheduled Group 3 Chautauqua Stakes and a Benchmark 84 mile. The track is rated a Soft 7, adding a challenge for contenders. Best bets include Gold Chariot (Race 4), Fieldelo (Race 6), Persian Spirit (Race 7), and Geffina (Race 9; each way). Notable factors such as strong recent form, first-up performance records, and proven performance on soft ground are essential in these selections. Persian Spirit appears well-placed in the feature, while value backers could latch onto Geffina.

Ten races make up Wednesday’s Sandown Hillside program, with both the Group 3 Chautauqua Stakes and a Benchmark 84 mile added after the final two races of Saturday’s Moir Stakes meeting were abandoned.

The track is currently rated a Soft 7, with the rail out eight metres for the entire circuit.

Sandown Tips September 9

Quayclean Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Sandown Best Bet - Race 4 No. 11 Gold Chariot

Blake Shinn has ridden winning doubles at the past two Sandown Hillside meetings and gets the chance to continue that strong run aboard Gold Chariot for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr.

Shinn has partnered the gelding to victories at his past two starts, including a dominant maiden win on the Pakenham synthetic on August 3 before Gold Chariot handled the rise to Benchmark 66 company with relative ease at Sandown Lakeside on August 19.

With three consecutive runs over a mile now under his belt, the rise to 1800m looks a logical progression, while there was also good form around his first preparation, including an unlucky second behind subsequent Group 2 winner Storm Leopard.

His July 15 return over a mile on the Hillside circuit was better than it reads given he needed the run, and he has continued to improve with each appearance since.

Emperor Tzu is on the second line of betting after winning here last Wednesday, but Gold Chariot beat that rival comfortably on August 19 and meets him 1kg better at the weights despite Jabez Johnstone’s 2kg claim aboard the second market elect.

Tobin Brothers Celebrating Lives Tips (Race 6)

Sandown Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 2 Fieldelo

A proven fresh performer with two encouraging winter trials behind her, Fieldelo looks capable of producing a strong return despite being off the scene since October.

Her two peak performances have both come first-up, including a debut victory at Kilmore over Sweethearted before a seven-length romp at Bendigo when resuming in May last year.

That second preparation continued strongly, with Fieldelo placing in two of her next three starts and finishing her campaign with a Listed placing.

There were excuses for her only start last spring when she covered ground throughout in a leader-dominated race at Moonee Valley, while the bigger expanses of the Hillside circuit should suit her much better.

She has looked forward in her trials and finds a suitable fresh assignment against her own sex, and Vain Champagne is one at a bigger price worth respecting after two sound August trials, with the drop in both trip and class two big ticks.

Sandown Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 6 Persian Spirit

Strong late support arrived for Persian Spirit ahead of Saturday’s Chautauqua Stakes before the final two races were abandoned, and bookmakers have taken no chances with him for Wednesday’s rescheduled Group 3.

We were with the Symon Wilde-trained galloper on an each-way basis as our best bet at Caulfield on August 15, where he had every opportunity but still produced a solid first-up performance when finishing runner-up over 1200m.

The rise to 1300m is much more suitable and he has shown enough tactical versatility to take up a position if required, while his ability to handle all track conditions is another major positive.

Persian Spirit should strip fitter with that run under his belt and appears well placed to take another step forward second-up in a race that looks within his reach.

Amenable is worth respecting at longer odds on stable debut for Grahame Begg, with two good trials behind him and both career wins coming first-up, while his Group 1 All Aged Stakes placing underlines the level of form he has produced at his best.

Stow Storage Solutions Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Sandown Value Bet - Race 9 No. 3 Geffina

A consistent campaign last season produced three wins for Geffina, including consecutive victories during May at Warrnambool and Mount Gambier.

Both of those successes came on rain-affected ground, while her attempt at a hat-trick resulted in a runner-up finish behind Beach Pad during the Swan Hill carnival.

That form reads well for this level given Beach Pad subsequently recorded two Benchmark 84 placings at Caulfield in July, while Geffina was later spelled after a midfield effort over a mile at Sandown Lakeside on July 1.

The five-year-old moved nicely when runner-up to five-time Stakes winner Steparty in an August 31 Casterton jump-out, giving her a solid platform for this return.

Fresh may now be the ideal time to catch Geffina, who won first-up over 1300m on Heavy ground last September, and in an open race she looks capable of running well at a big each-way price.
