Happy Valley Tips October 14

Elgin Handicap Tips (Race 3)

Happy Valley Best Bet - Race 3 No. 2 Shooting To Top

A genuine performer through all eight Hong Kong starts, Shooting To Top built nicely into his first campaign before breaking through third-up over this track and distance on April 22.

Luck deserted him thereafter with a run of wide barriers, but he remained competitive, including a half-length defeat on May 13 before later finishing fourth and second in his final two appearances of the season.

The September 9 return was another tough assignment from barrier 11, where he battled on for sixth-of-11, before improving sharply here on September 23 when runner-up to Akermanis Gold under Zac Purton.

He covered ground in that latest performance and the race ultimately set up ideally for Akermanis Gold, who had a far more economical run and remains progressive, while that form gets another test in the previous race on Wednesday night.

Purton stays aboard from barrier two this time and, with two runs under the belt, a kinder map and a Class 4 no stronger than his latest assignment, Shooting To Top looks well placed to record his second career victory.

The HKEX Tech 100 Cup Tips (Race 6)

Happy Valley Feature Bet - Race 6 No. 7 Le Zonda

Pierre Ng has made a strong start to the season, and Le Zonda has been one of the stable’s headline performers after bringing up a hat-trick with another Happy Valley success on September 16.

The son of Beckford had already closed out last season with back-to-back wins over 1800m here, including a Class 2 victory on July 8 when overcoming barrier 10 to defeat the handy Pope Cody by a length.

His first-up 1650m victory was better than the narrow margin suggests when back in a muddling affair, with Le Zonda again showing the sharp turn of foot that makes him particularly dangerous when these middle-distance races become tactical.

Only a 2kg penalty comes from that return win, he has since been kept up to the mark with an October 6 trial, and there is no query about the return to 1800m given the strength of his previous two victories over the trip.

Speed Dragon, Massive Sovereign, Silvery Breeze and Californiatotality were all behind him in the September 16 event, and with Le Zonda still appearing to have upside at this level, there is every reason to think the winning run can continue.

Finance Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Happy Valley Value Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Flashing Fighter

It has been a relatively quiet start to the season for Ricky Yiu, although signs of improvement arrived at Sha Tin last Sunday, and Flashing Fighter looks an interesting fresh runner after showing genuine ability during his first campaign.

The son of Written Tycoon made a winning debut at Sha Tin on April 12, leading early before fighting strongly to take out a Class 4 that later produced two subsequent winners.

His next two failures both came with legitimate excuses, with a substantial amount of mucus found in his trachea after the May 9 run before he was inconvenienced early from a wide draw and later pulled up lame at Happy Valley on June 3.

The first trial back on September 21 left room for improvement after he raced wide and weakened, but the October 5 hit-out was much better as he made ground into third over 1200m at Conghua.

Nichola Yuen, who partnered him to that debut victory, remains aboard and claims 3kg, while barrier four should allow Flashing Fighter to settle handy and give him every chance on return at an each-way price.

Harbour View Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Happy Valley Roughie - Race 9 No. 2 Straight To Glory

Michael Chang has enjoyed a profitable October, with four winners striking at 27% for an 86% return on investment, highlighted by a double at Sha Tin on October 4 before preparing another two winners at Happy Valley last Wednesday.

The five-year-old is versatile, being a dual winner over this track and distance after scoring here on January 7 and again on January 28, while Straight To Glory also proved effective twice over the Sha Tin 1000m late last season, and Derek Leung was aboard for all four victories.

His September 13 return over 1000m was a pass mark after he was caught flat-footed when the leaders sprinted before picking up again late, suggesting the sharp trip was simply against him first-up.

Nothing went right at this track on September 23, with Straight To Glory forced to retreat after initially searching for a position before later striking trouble in the straight, making the ninth-place finish better than it reads.

Now with a 1200m run under the belt and Derek Leung again aboard, a cleaner passage can produce sharp third-up improvement from Straight To Glory at a big price.
