Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers A-League Round 1 Tips & Prediction

Allianz Stadium will be rocking as Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers collide in a mouth-watering derby showdown to kick off the 2026/27 A-League season on Friday night.

Over 30,000 fans are set to be in attendance as these two teams resume hostilities and attempt to get their respective seasons off to a winning start. Plenty of storylines going on too - including Ufuk Talay managing his first game as the Wanderers new boss against his former club.

As is the case every A-League season, there's been lots of player turnover at every club - which makes predicting early games challenging.

With this in mind, I'm going to turn my attention away from the result and towards other outcomes - although I do think the Wanderers represent decent value in the Double Chance market given this is basically a 50-50 contest in my eyes.

BTTS - Yes is a repeated trend in recent derbies, while I also want to focus on two players - Thiago Quintal of Sydney and Aydan Hammond of the Wanderers.

Quintal had a fantastic breakout campaign last term and the 20-year-old is set to scale new heights this season, while Hammond was impressive during preseason - especially in the friendly against Chelsea.

Both players are backed to work the keeper on Friday night.
  • BTTS has landed in seven of the last 10 meetings
  • Sydney have only won one of their last 10 home games in all comps
  • Wanderers have avoided defeat in four of their last seven away derbies
  • Thiago Quintal registered 1+ shots on target in all three appearances vs Wanderers last season
  • Quintal was prolific in preseason, registering five goal involvements in as many games
  • Aydan Hammond registered 10 total shots in three preseason games (five on target & 1+ in all three)
  • Hammond also registered 1+ shots on target in two of his three appearances vs Sydney last season

Sydney FC vs WS Wanderers Head To Head

Sydney have enjoyed the upper hand lately, winning six of the last eight meetings between the two teams.

The Wanderers won the first derby 1-0 last season before Sydney prevailed by 4-1 and 2-1 scores.

Sydney FC Form Analysis

Sydney were average for the bulk of last season, but picked things up after the arrival of Patrick Kisnorbo, improving defensively and going on to make the Grand Final, where they went down across the ditch to Auckland FC.

Kisnorbo will be hoping his team can go one step further this season and they've certainly got some fo the brightest young talents in the competition, led by Quintal and Akol Akon.

The Sky Blues enjoyed a 1-1 friendly with Tottenham during the preseason before going on to make the Australia Cup semi-finals, falling to rivals Melbourne Victory 2-0.

Sydney FC Team News

Big blow in the preseason as Spanish striker Victor Campuzano returned home to underdog knee surgery.

His absence opens the door for new signing Oriola Sunday to make his A-League debut up front, with the 23-year-old Nigerian playing 78 minutes for Sydney in the Australia Cup defeat to Victory.

Takahiro Sekine impressed during preseason, scoring three goals. The Japanese winger has played 300+ games for Urawa Red Diamonds and will be a key figure for the Sky Blues in the final third this term.

Harrison Devenish-Meares was last season's goalkeeper of the year, but endured a traumatic offseason, needing three surgeries to clear up a blood clot. He is set to underdog a medical assessment on October 19, where his availability for the season will become clearer.

Sydney FC Possible Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Gus Hoefsloot; Rhyan Grant, Alexandar Popović, Jordan Courtney-Perkins, Benjamin Garuccio; Jake Hollman, Joseph Lacey; Akol Akon, Tiago Quintal, Takahiro Sekine; Oriola Sunday

Western Sydney Wanderers Form Analysis

It was a nightmare season for the Wanderers last term as they finished bottom of the ladder, picking up the wooden spoon with just five wins from their 26 games.

There's been a big overhaul at the club, starting with new manager Ufuk Talay, while veteran Socceroos winger Brandon Borrello has been handed the captaincy role.

The Wanderers have looked decent in preseason, pushing Premier League heavyweights Chelsea in a wild 6-4 defeat, while it took eventual finalists Victory to knock them out of the Australia Cup on penalties.

Western Sydney come into this clash having won their last three friendlies and eager to erase the memories of last season.

Western Sydney Wanderers Team News

Some new faces at Wanderland, including A-League premiership-winning defender German Ferreyra (City), treble-winner Miguel Di Pizio (Mariners) and 2025 Johnny Warren Medallist Nicolas Milanovic, who returns to the club after a stint overseas.

Anthony Pantazopoulos won't need added motivation to get up for the derby as the fiery defender looks to make an immediate impact, while Hammond will be looking to continue his fine form after an impressive preseason.

WS Wanderers Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): Lawrence Thomas; Panashe Madanha, Germán Ferreyra, Anthony Pantazopoulos, Alex Gersbach; Aydan Hammond, Dylan Scicluna, Angus Thurgate, Nicolas Milanovic; Brandon Borrello, Miguel Di Pizio
