Doomben Best Bet - Race 1 No. 1 Wrigley Field

It has been a good winter for trainer Jack Bruce, with his 22 winners since the start of June coming at a strike-rate of just under 26%.

Ryan Maloney jumps aboard Wrigley Field fourth-up, with the experienced hoop striking at just under 27% for the Jack Bruce stable over the past 12 months and returning an ROI better than 20%.

The ex-Victorian has gone well in all three Queensland appearances, catching the eye both first and second-up before staying at 1400m for one run too many on August 8 when beaten as favourite.

The son of Doubtland also had little luck in that latest appearance when back, wide and chasing throughout in a fast-run race, doing well to finish only one-and-a-quarter lengths from the winner despite the tough run.

Wrigley Field rises sharply in the weights to 60kg but gets a low draw to offset that and, importantly, steps to the mile for the first time, a distance he has looked to be crying out for all campaign in what is not an overly strong race.

The Gibson BM80 Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Doomben Favourite - Race 4 No. 2 Fernao

The Archibald camp is not always the easiest yard to catch, although Fernao generally holds his form once he finds it, which was evident throughout his first two Australian campaigns.

After looking in the wilderness through much of last season, he improved sharply off a freshen-up in the Listed Winter Cup at Rosehill on June 13 after a string of heavy defeats.

The gelding has progressed further since heading north to Brisbane, arriving at this BM80 off back-to-back seconds with excuses in both, including last Saturday when back and held up at key stages.

The recent form through Cavalry Man and Felix The Scat reads well enough for this grade and, after Benjamin Osman's 2kg claim, Fernao rises only 1.5kg despite dropping back in company.

He also has some history on a seven-day turnaround, with his most recent attempt at that pattern resulting in a Listed placing at Flemington, and after not having an overly testing run last week, there should be plenty left in the tank for the son of Frankel to bring up win number five.

XXXX Class 6 Plate Tips (Race 6)

Doomben Value Bet - Race 6 No. 2 Mister Bianco

While beaten as favourite, Mister Bianco's Sir James Kirby Quality return on Grafton Cup Day was a solid one, with class taking him a long way despite 1000m being short of his best.

Off that encouraging fresh effort, there was support for him at a good price in a Class 6 at Eagle Farm on August 8, where he was somewhat plain but still competitive in a fifth-of-10 finish.

Blinkers go on for Saturday's third-up assignment and, more broadly, he may simply not be an Eagle Farm horse, with only one placing there since his debut more than two years ago, with Eagle Farm often noted as a horses-for-courses track.

His Doomben record reads better, including a BM70 victory with 60.5kg in June last year, while his subsequent appearances at this circuit have all been competitive under big weights.

Mister Bianco needs to overcome a wide draw but is tactically versatile and, with the platform to spike third-up, he represents each-way value in this small-field Class 6 Set Weights dash.

Doomben Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 14 Land Bank

Brisbane's leading trainer Tony Gollan has a big team entered for Saturday's meeting, with Land Bank his sole representative in the opening leg of the quaddie.

The gelding gets to the mile for the first time after bringing up career win number three second-up over 1350m in a midweek Class 3 at Doomben on August 5, following a good return at Ipswich.

He has been mostly thereabouts since a debut flop at Pakenham in February last year and now looks a more seasoned galloper capable of working his way through the lower grades over the early spring.

There was also some decent form around his early-season efforts last spring, including a maiden win over Chains Of Love, who bolted in next start and was Listed placed at Flemington last month.

The wide draw is the main knock, but Land Bank can settle forward or back and looks one of the few runners in this No Metro Wins affair with genuine upside, while 53.5kg and Daniel Moor in the saddle are further positives.
