Adelaide celebrates esteemed trainer Leon Macdonald with the feature Leon Macdonald Stakes at Morphettville this Saturday. The action-packed card features expert selections: Cote Atlantique is favoured to win the main event, while Amalfi Dreamer (Race 4) and Vintage Star (Race 6) are strong bets, and Officiate is tipped as a value roughie in Race 7. The Jolly and Dwyer stables are prominent throughout the program. The Soft 7 track should suit these picks, and punters are advised to monitor conditions for optimal results.

Morphettville Tips August 22

The Junction Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Morphettville Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 3 Amalfi Dreamer

The father-and-daughter training partnership of Richard and Chantelle Jolly has been profitable to follow at Morphettville Parks over the past 12 months, returning an ROI of almost 16% on the inner circuit.

From 13 starters at the track this season they have already produced four winners and four placegetters, with the first of those victories coming via Amalfi Dreamer, who bolted in with a maiden over 1250m here on August 1.

While she admittedly got first look at the track that day, the performance still rated very well for maiden grade, having arrived there off a terrific Morphettville debut on July 8 when she got back from a wide draw over 1050m and recorded the fastest last 200m of the entire program despite doing a few things wrong.

Her breeding suggests the extra distance should hold no fears at start three and she has already shown herself effective on rain-affected ground, with this shaping as a very winnable assignment against more exposed and mostly limited opposition.

Rochelle Milnes stays aboard after opening her season with a city double on August 1 and riding two winners from three mounts at Strathalbyn on Wednesday.

Adelaide Galvanising Industries Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Morphettville Value Bet - Race 6 No. 7 Vintage Star

Vintage Star looks to be working towards a peak performance, with the six-year-old another leading chance on Saturday for the Jolly yard.

He had no luck when resuming over this track-and-trip on July 18, covering ground throughout and understandably tiring late, before improving second-up on August 1 when supported at a big price.

His Morphettville Parks record is solid, particularly over the shorter sprint trips, with two wins and two placings from seven attempts over 1000m on this circuit, including a third-up placing in stronger company last November.

The main query is a genuinely wet surface, so ideally there is no further downgrade from the current Soft 7, although he appeared to handle a Soft 6 without issue second-up and should only strip fitter from that August 1 outing.

The main speed influences are drawn wider, which should ensure a decent tempo, and from barrier four under 3kg claimer Caitlin Munro, Vintage Star should enjoy an economical run in transit.

The Fotobase Group Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Morphettville Roughie - Race 7 No. 6 Officiate

He was scratched from last Saturday's Morphettville program and draws wide again here, while also stepping up sharply in trip for this BM74 over 1994m.

The placement does look aggressive given this is only his third outing for the Bain and Taylor stable, although he also went to a mile off a 1250m stable debut and completed a tick-over Murray Bridge jump-out on August 6 after his July 25 runner-up effort.

There is therefore a reasonable fitness base in place, while he also drops in the weights to 57kg, which is 3kg less than he carried last start after beginning his Adelaide campaign with 61.5kg over a trip that was arguably too sharp.

He had some strong references when prepared by Chris Waller, including a Stakes placing last spring, and from four starts on Soft and Heavy tracks he has never finished outside the placings.

The Bain and Taylor yard does well with these tried horses and, with a rating that should allow him to be placed appropriately, Officiate looks capable of picking off a race or two in Adelaide soon.

Sportsbet Leon Macdonald Stakes Tips (Race 8)

Morphettville Best Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Cote Atlantique

Adelaide has been Henry Dwyer's most successful metropolitan jurisdiction, with the Ballarat trainer striking at 17% in South Australian city company and 20% at Morphettville Parks.

Dwyer crosses the border with Cote Atlantique, who looks to have found a suitable assignment to break a winning drought that stretches back to the Listed Seymour Cup in October, where he defeated the smart Saint George.

He has remained competitive without winning since and his 2026 campaign has been spaced out, beginning with a trip to New Zealand before a freshen-up and Brisbane campaign that included a Listed placing.

Another break preceded the Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast before a month between runs into the Group 3 Aurie's Star at Flemington on August 1, where the drop back to 1200m was against him but he still worked home strongly.

His record suggests 1400m is the sweet spot and, back to that trip in what does not look a vintage edition of the Listed Leon Macdonald Stakes, Cote Atlantique looks well placed to return to the winner's circle on a surface he should handle.
