Swan Hill Tips August 21

Ultimate Hotel Maiden Plate Tips (Race 3)

Swan Hill Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 14 Whimsy Smile

Wet conditions have brought out two encouraging performances from Whimsy Smile at Seymour this preparation, including a runner-up finish earlier this month.

Beaten just over a length after racing prominently, the three-year-old looked the likely winner before being overhauled by a strong-finishing rival late.

He travelled on speed before going clear in the straight over 1200m, and the extra 100m here should pose no concerns.

Any further downgrade would also hold no fears, with the gelding having placed on a Heavy 9 when resuming last month before handling a Soft 7 last start.

The wide draw is a slight concern, although Whimsy Smile performed well from a double-figure barrier last time and can do so again with Harry Grace taking the ride for the first time.

Swan Hill Value Bet - Race 4 No. 6 Bourdeto

Bourdeto produced a solid return when finishing fourth on a Heavy 9 at Sale, beaten just over two lengths in a 14-runner 1005m maiden.

She reportedly failed to handle similarly testing conditions at Cranbourne next time, with both of those runs coming on Heavy 9 ground.

Less testing conditions should suit here, with the mare heading into this after another fourth-place finish on the Ballarat synthetic just under two weeks ago.

The winner and ninth from that race have both subsequently placed third, giving the form some substance ahead of Friday’s assignment.

Barrier three is another positive, and with the Ben, Will and JD Hayes stable regularly among the winners at Swan Hill, Bourdeto rates as value to break through.

Swan Hill Roughie - Race 6 No. 5 Ate Iron

There have been some solid wet-track efforts from Ate Iron this preparation, including a third on Heavy ground three starts ago.

That came over 2050m in maiden company, where the gelding finished just under six-and-a-half lengths from the winner.

The son of Spieth then broke through for his first victory when making his synthetic debut at Ballarat last start.

Ridden from midfield, Ate Iron was held up for clear running at a crucial stage before scoring by just under a length, with the fourth-placed runner from that race subsequently placing at Geelong.

His keenness through the early and middle stages last time is a concern, although the rise in distance should suit and the John Symons and Sheila Laxon-trained gelding can surprise some better-fancied rivals.

Swan Hill Best Bet - Race 7 No. 7 Miss Trustful

Miss Trustful registered the third win of her career when saluting at Geelong on her penultimate start.

Contesting a Benchmark 56 on Heavy ground, the mare impressed in scoring by more than two-and-a-half lengths after settling fifth for much of the 1760m contest.

That form has received a boost with the sixth-placed runner going on to win next time, while Miss Trustful herself stepped up to Benchmark 62 company and produced a solid fifth over 1700m at Geelong last start.

The return to this grade is firmly in her favour, while she has shown enough early speed in her past two appearances to help offset the wide draw.

Representing the powerful Ciaron Maher stable, Miss Trustful looks well placed to record her second victory of 2026.
