One of Britain's most popular racing carnivals begins on Wednesday, with the 2026 Ebor Festival getting underway at York.

Wednesday's card is headlined by a cracking renewal of the Juddmonte International Stakes, while leading St Leger contenders clash in the Great Voltigeur Stakes after a promising group of juveniles tackles the historic Acomb Stakes.

Our race-by-race preview for day one of the 2026 Ebor Festival is detailed below, while Live Racing & Sports Updates provides the latest previews, analysis and coverage across all sporting codes.

Ebor Festival 2026 - Day 1 Preview

Race 1 - Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Handicap Tips

Eight of the last ten winners of this card-opening sprint handicap have jumped from barrier 10 or lower, and I want to back two contenders drawn towards the inside.

18. Air Force One was caught in traffic at a crucial stage last year but was taking ground off Trefor and The Man with every stride when hitting the line strongly in third.

Geoff Oldroyd's five-year-old has remained in good form since that narrow defeat, going down by a neck at York again last September, winning nicely at Beverley on his return and finishing within a length of the winner on each of his past three starts.

PJ McDonald's mount is rated around 3kg higher than 12 months ago but carries just 56.5kg and has landed a favourable draw in barrier five.

Then there's 7. Candy, who has finished last on his two most recent starts but had genuine excuses on both occasions.

Richard Spencer's gelding banged his head leaving the barriers when tailed off in the Wokingham, while Jack Callan's saddle slipped around halfway in the Shaker Handicap at Glorious Goodwood.

George Wood was aboard when Candy bolted up in the Ayr Silver Cup last season, and the Ayr Gold Cup will surely have been on Spencer's radar ever since that demolition job.

He'll want to see a return to form before heading back to Scotland next month, but Candy is certainly classy enough to challenge in this grade.

Race 2 - Acomb Stakes Tips

There hasn't been a winning favourite in the Acomb Stakes since 2015, although Haffner should go close following his effort behind Dr Rascal at Goodwood.

That said, I was mightily impressed with 1. Alfred Wallace when he struck late to land the Pat Eddery Stakes at Ascot last start, and I'd rather back Ed Walker's colt at 6/1 than Aidan O'Brien's market leader.

Alfred Wallace couldn't find clear running when finishing down the field in the Windsor Castle Stakes and didn't appreciate front-running tactics in the Superlative Stakes.

Despite those defeats, Kieran Shoemark's mount was backed into favouritism for the Pat Eddery and stormed home from off the pace to collar Silver Dominion near the line.

Walker's colt is bred to be good, being by Dubawi out of Group 1-winning miler Snow Lantern, and he has already won twice over 1400m this season.

There's every reason to think Alfred Wallace can take another step forward here.

Race 3 - Great Voltigeur Stakes Tips

Five leading St Leger hopefuls will meet before the final Classic of the season at Doncaster next month.

Christmas Day beat Maltese Cross and Pierre Bonnard in the Epsom Derby before Aidan O'Brien's star finished second to Benvenuto Cellini in the Irish equivalent the following month, with Pierre Bonnard back in third.

Maltese Cross then opened his Group 1 account in the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp in July.

Superior Choice is an interesting contender for the Gosdens, with this son of Loving Dream looking ready to test himself at pattern level, while 4. Galiyan is the least fancied of the St Leger entrants despite running well at both Royal Ascot and the July Festival.

Andrew Balding's runner could only finish sixth as favourite for the Queen's Vase but was beaten just three lengths despite racing very greenly throughout.

Galiyan produced a much more mature performance in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket next time, staying on strongly to finish a close second behind impressive winner Point Of Law.

He has improved with each of his four starts this campaign and proved at Newmarket that he is capable of competing at this level.

Dropping back in distance may not be ideal for such a strong stayer, but odds of 11/1 look generous considering the promise he's shown this preparation.

Race 4 - Juddmonte International Stakes Tips

Although this race is run over a testing 2000m, speed could prove the most important attribute on Wednesday.

Ombudsman relished a strong tempo when winning this race 12 months ago and returns to York following a career-best performance in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes, where he again travelled comfortably behind a rapid pace before showing an impressive turn of foot.

The three-year-olds receive 3.5kg from the older horses, which has to be factored into calculations.

Item has been hugely impressive in two starts at York this season, but I could see Andrew Balding's star being outpaced early if the expected front-runners tear along.

Hawk Mountain doesn't appear particularly sharp either, and I suspect he'd be more comfortable on a slower surface.

7. Constitution River, on the other hand, seems to relish genuinely fast ground.

Aidan O'Brien's colt looked like a potential superstar when scoring at Chester first-up and did just enough to overcome a horror draw when winning the Prix du Jockey Club next start.

On first viewing, I wasn't overly impressed by Constitution River's victory in the Eclipse.

The pacemakers dropped away much sooner than expected, the two older horses underperformed and Ryan Moore's mount was forced to tough it out in the straight, with A Boy Named Susie and Hawk Mountain chasing hard.

Constitution River still managed to record a fast time at Sandown, producing the sixth-fastest Eclipse ever recorded.

I suspect that time would have been even quicker had Flushing Meadows been able to maintain the tempo for another 200m or so.

Devil's Advocate did an excellent job setting the pace at Royal Ascot, and Action will take on pacemaking duties for Ballydoyle on Wednesday.

The race should again be run to suit Ombudsman, but I get the feeling Constitution River is better than he's shown in recent starts, and that three-year-old weight allowance could help him get the better of the defending champion.
For those looking at an each-way option, 1. Almaqam could easily finish in the placings.

Ed Walker's five-year-old looked better than ever when winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup first-up at the Curragh before racing a little flat when fourth in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

I don't think the fast ground brought Almaqam undone that day, with the short turnaround between his first two runs a more likely explanation.

Walker has freshened his stable star for this high-profile assignment, and Kieran Shoemark's mount is classy enough to give the market leaders something to think about.

Race 5 - Sky Bet Stayers Handicap Tips

3. Kirchner looked to have plenty left in reserve when scoring at Ascot recently, and the booking of Ryan Moore suggests James Owen and his team mean business.

Owen's recruit finished down the field on his first couple of starts for the stable, both over 2400m.

Kirchner then ran a huge race when second to Align The Stars on his first attempt at 3200m in the Northumberland Plate before thrashing a couple of decent rivals to register his first victory for the stable at Ascot.

Despite a surprising drift in betting, Kirchner was comfortably on top at the finish and looked every inch a Group-class stayer in the making.

I'd be extremely surprised if his new rating of 97 proved to be his ceiling, while Kirchner also appeared to relish fast ground when producing that career-best performance.

Race 6 - Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Handicap Tips

A second sprint handicap has been added to the day one program, although this contest is restricted to three-year-olds.

Plenty of speed appears to be drawn towards the outside, and 9. Tricky Tel could be ideally placed to challenge from the widest barrier.

Hugo Palmer's sprinter has done most of his winning at Chester but also scored at Hamilton earlier this season, proving he isn't solely reliant on the Roodee to produce his best form.

Tricky Tel never really featured in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes at Royal Ascot after blowing the start but was much more competitive at Chester last time, finishing second behind Calico Blue.

That winner has since gone close at Listed level, while Tricky Tel remains on the same rating of 89.

Fast beginner Revival Power has drawn directly to his inside, which could allow Jason Hart to track that rival into the race before launching his challenge over the final 200m.

Race 7 - Nursery Handicap Tips

I don't have a particularly strong opinion here, with most of the 22 runners possessing some sort of winning chance.

I've backed Crystal Queen, Elevating and Super Tuscan at various stages this season, and all three could still be well handicapped.

7. Persian Spring looks particularly over the odds given how impressively he won over this course and distance earlier in the campaign.

Richard Hannon's runner then finished down the field in the Norfolk Stakes after being slowly away and finding himself outpaced.

Persian Spring was tardy from the barriers again on his handicap debut at Glorious Goodwood and couldn't make enough ground as Revels claimed a narrow victory.

Jamie Spencer rode Persian Spring much more positively when he won here at York in May, and I'm hoping Pat Dobbs reverts to similar tactics on Wednesday.

If Hannon's sprinter can begin cleanly, I can see him mounting a strong challenge from what could prove a favourable draw in barrier four.
