Joao Fonseca faces Christopher O'Connell in the third round of ATP Cincinnati. While O'Connell has enjoyed a solid run after injury setbacks, his poor record in deeper stages (3-14 in third matches) and struggles against top-30 opponents make Fonseca the clear favorite. Fonseca's consistent form and powerful forehand should secure him a straight sets win. The Brazilian is aiming to solidify his top-30 status, while O'Connell continues to rebuild his ranking. Joao Fonseca vs Christopher O'Connell ATP Cincinnati Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Aussie qualifier Chris O'Connell has enjoyed a nice run to the third round of the Cincinnati Masters, but it likely ends here - he has a poor 3-14 record when playing the third match of a tour-level event and Joao Fonseca is poised for a convincing straight sets victory when the pair square off on Tuesday.

Great to see O'Connell having a good tournament in Cincinnati after a tough run of injuries sent him spiralling out of the top 100. The Aussie has come through qualifying and benefitted from a Casper Ruud retirement in the previous round to take his spot in the third round, where he now gets to test himself against one of the most explosive young stars in the sport.

Fonseca has established himself in the top 30 this season with a series of consistent results and he will be hoping to emulate fellow 19-year-old Rafael Jodar and start making a push towards the top 10 by the end of the season.

The Brazilian is equipped with one of the biggest forehands in the game and he can attack the one-handed backhand of O'Connell, where he will be looking for short balls. O'Connell will always make you work, but he just lacks a bit of real quality to match it with elite opponents at this stage of the bigger tournaments.

Keeping it simple and no need to overthink this one - a couple of units on Fonseca to prevail in straight sets and secure his spot in the fourth round.
  • Fonseca has won five of his last six 'second matches' this season
  • All three of Fonseca's wins over players outside the top 100 this season have been in straight sets
  • Eight of Fonseca's nine wins over players outside the top 50 this season have been in straight sets
  • O'Connell is 3-14 lifetime in his 'third matches' of tour-level tournaments
  • O'Connell has a 11-32 record vs top 30 players, with his last eight defeats coming in straight sets

Fonseca vs O'Connell Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Joao Fonseca Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 19-13
  • ATP Cincinnati Record: 3-1
  • Current Ranking: No. 26
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 24 (2025)

Injury derailed Fonseca's start to the season, but he's settled in nicely and comes into Cincinnati two spots shy of his career-high ranking, which was achieved after winning the Basel title at the end of last year.

Fonseca's best results include making a maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros, beating Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud along the way, while he was also a quarter-finalist in Monte Carlo and made the R16 at Indian Wells, along with a third round at Wimbledon.

The Brazilian beat Ruud again in advancing to the R16 of Montreal in his last tournament, where he was upstaged by eventual champion Ben Shelton.

Fonseca opened his Cincinnati campaign with a 6-4 7-6 victory over Botic Van De Zandschulp. He reached the third round in his debut appearance last year before falling to surprise semi-finalist Terence Atmane.

Christopher O'Connell Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 4-7
  • ATP Cincinnati Record: 2-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 129
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 53 (2023)

O'Connell has mostly competed on the Challenger Tour in 2026 as he attempts to rebuild his ranking and get back inside the top 100.

This run in Cincinnati will certainly help, with the Aussie currently up to a live ranking of No. 114 after qualifying for the main draw and advancing to the third round.

O'Connell beat fellow Australian Dane Sweeny and Alexander Shevchenko in qualifying before taking care of Kamil Majchrzak 6-4 7-6 in the first round of the main draw. The 32-year-old then led Ruud 7-5 1-2 before the Norwegian retired, handing a spot in the third round.

Prior to this week, O'Connell's best tour-level result in 2026 came back in early February, where he beat Cam Norrie to make the quarter-finals of the 500 event in Rotterdam. He suffered a first round elimination to compatriot James Duckworth in Montreal in his last tournament.
