Ipswich Tips August 19

TAB Maiden Handicap Tips (Race 1)

Ipswich Best Bet - Race 1 No. 1 Moscow Mule

City form has been a feature of Moscow Mule’s three starts to date, with the New Zealand-bred gelding demonstrating plenty of ability in each appearance.

The most recent came at Doomben two weeks ago, where the four-year-old finished a narrow runner-up over 1350m on a Good 4 after beginning slowly and being ridden cold.

He did best of those settling back that day, while the seventh-placed runner has since gone on to finish second at Eagle Farm.

That effort also suggested the rise in distance should suit here, while the switch to forecast Soft going holds no concerns given both of his previous starts came on rain-affected ground.

Ben Thompson retains the ride after partnering him in his past two starts, and with the drop to provincial level another positive, Moscow Mule looks well placed to break through at start four.

Ipswich Roughie - Race 2 No. 5 Slight Variation

A number of trials preceded Slight Variation’s debut at this track just under two weeks ago, where the gelding produced a better effort than the result suggests.

Racing over 1100m, he was ridden with restraint and stayed on nicely for sixth in a race dominated by those settling prominently.

Although beaten seven lengths, the debut experience should bring him on and he shaped as though the rise in distance would suit.

Barrier three gives him every chance to settle closer, while the son of Better Than Ready has already shown he can handle Soft going and also appeared comfortable on Good and Heavy surfaces through his trials.

The booking of Emily Lang for Kelly Purdy catches the eye, and Slight Variation can improve sharply enough at his second start to trouble some better-fancied rivals.

Ipswich Value Bet - Race 5 No. 6 Adranos

Several efforts in defeat this preparation have had merit from Adranos, including a third at this venue on his penultimate start.

That performance came over this track and trip on a wet surface, where the gelding raced prominently from an inside draw and was beaten just over one-and-a-half lengths in a similar contest.

He backed that up with another good third from a wide alley at the Sunshine Coast earlier this month, with the ninth-placed runner from that race subsequently winning in metropolitan company.

A wide barrier should not prove a major issue here given the six-year-old has shown tactical versatility in the past, while any track upgrade would also hold no concerns.

Representing the Tony Gollan stable, Adranos looks a value chance to double his career tally.

Ipswich Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 1 Precise Star

Since joining Tony Gollan earlier this year, Precise Star has made an immediate impact by winning both starts for the stable.

The four-year-old broke through with a narrow Sunshine Coast victory last month, justifying short-priced favouritism over 1200m on a Soft surface.

He then proved quicker ground was no issue at the Gold Coast, making all the running to score by four lengths at Benchmark 58 level.

Precise Star was well away from a wide alley that day and gets a more favourable draw here, while the rise in distance looks another positive.

Bella Youngberry’s 3kg claim further strengthens his case, and with a 26% strike-rate riding for the Gollan stable in 2026, she can help Precise Star continue his winning run.
