The Moir Stakes takes centre stage at Sandown Hillside on Saturday, September 5, with the Group 1 sprint to be contested over 1000m under weight-for-age conditions.
Traditionally staged at Moonee Valley, the race has shifted to Sandown Hillside in 2026 due to The Valley redevelopment, adding a different dimension to one of the spring’s premier short-course contests.
Giga Kick and Natural Fling share favouritism at $4 with Unibet Australia in an early market that brings together proven Group 1 sprinting class and one of the most exciting three-year-olds of the new season.
Giga Kick resumes as one of Australia’s established sprint stars, with the former The Everest winner having rounded out his previous spring campaign with victories in the Schillaci Stakes and Champions Sprint.
The Clayton Douglas-trained galloper has been given a solid build-up for his return, featuring in several recent trials, including a Sandown hit-out on August 27 where he finished behind fellow Moir contender My Gladiola.
Natural Fling has emerged as a major spring contender after producing a dominant first-up victory in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield on August 15.
The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained filly now makes the significant jump into Group 1 weight-for-age company, where the three-year-old allowance leaves her particularly well treated over the Sandown 1000m.
My Gladiola is next at $6.50 and brings proven Group 1 sprint form into her return.
The John McArdle-trained mare finished runner-up in both the Coolmore Stud Stakes and Lightning Stakes last season and has impressed in her lead-up work, finishing ahead of Giga Kick in a Sandown jump-out on August 27.
Extragalactic and Cavalry Girl share the next line of betting at $11.
Cavalry Girl enters the Moir in career-best form after winning the Group 3 Carlyon Stakes over this course and distance on August 22, extending her winning streak to three and taking her record to four victories from her past five starts.
Extragalactic was scratched from her scheduled resumption in the Carlyon Stakes and instead won a Pakenham jump-out on August 25. She showed plenty of promise throughout last season, with her most recent campaign culminating in a narrow defeat in The Goodwood.
Skybird and Point Barrow are next at $12, while the nominations also include Generosity ($14), Headwall ($15) and Geegees Mistruth ($21).

Moir Stakes History
The Moir Stakes might not be the oldest race on the Melbourne calendar, but it has developed into one of the country’s most popular and important sprinting features.
Champion sprinters Black Caviar, Buffering and Apache Cat all launched major campaigns with victory in the race, while Viddora claimed the 2018 edition before heading to Hong Kong for the International Sprint.
Traditionally staged on the night before the AFL Grand Final, the 1000m weight-for-age contest was moved to early September in 2024 as a key lead-up to the Manikato Stakes.
The most recent winners are Imperatriz in 2023, Mornington Glory in 2024 and Baraqiel in 2025.
