The Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) has long been one of the key early-season sprint contests, regularly bringing together some of Australia’s fastest horses in a high-pressure test of pure speed.
Its recent honour roll underlines the quality required, with winners including Imperatriz, Coolangatta, Mornington Glory and Baraqiel, while champion sprinters Black Caviar, Nature Strip, Buffering and Miss Andretti are among the famous names to have won the race.
The 2026 edition brings a significant change, with the Moir Stakes moving from its traditional Moonee Valley home to Sandown Hillside while The Valley undergoes redevelopment. Giga Kick, Natural Fling, My Gladiola, Skybird and a strong group of spring sprinters are among those set to clash in Saturday’s renewal.

After The Moir
The Moir Stakes has regularly provided an early spring guide to sprinters capable of making their presence felt at Group 1 level later in the campaign.
Imperatriz produced one of the standout recent performances when winning the 2023 edition in a track-record 56.47 seconds, before going on to further Group 1 success as she established herself among the country’s premier sprinters.
The 2022 race also proved a strong form reference. Winner Coolangatta returned the following autumn to defeat the older sprinters in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning at Flemington, while runner-up Bella Nipotina continued to build one of the strongest sprinting records of her generation.
Baraqiel added his name to the honour roll in 2025 after maintaining his unbeaten record at The Valley, before stepping up to 1200m and finishing runner-up to Charm Stone in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes later that month.
The race’s wider honour roll adds further weight to its standing, with champions including Black Caviar, Nature Strip, Buffering, Apache Cat and Manikato among the famous names to have won the Moir Stakes.
Saturday’s edition will be unlike any of those recent renewals, with the switch to Sandown Hillside providing a completely different test as the Moir Stakes moves away from Moonee Valley for 2026.
