The 2026 Moir Stakes headlines early-spring racing at Sandown Hillside, switching from its traditional Moonee Valley home. With rain forecast, conditions may challenge the talented field. Natural Fling is tipped as the best bet after a standout first-up win and a strong weight advantage. Extragalactic offers value off an impressive jump-out and favourable barrier, while Skybird, fresh and proven when early in prep, is a respected roughie. Overall, punters are recommended to back Natural Fling with each-way considerations for Extragalactic and Skybird.
- Natural Fling is best bet after standout Quezette win and weight edge
- Extragalactic and Skybird represent each-way value
- Track conditions and Sandown’s switch may be decisive factors

The 2026 Moir Stakes shapes as a fascinating early-spring sprint at Sandown Hillside, with the 1000m Group 1 bringing together proven top-level performers and several runners still building towards their peak.
With showers forecast for Saturday and the possibility of a rain-affected surface, track conditions could add another layer to a race already shaped by the switch from Moonee Valley to Sandown and several leading chances carrying genuine queries.
Natural Fling heads the early market for the 2026 Moir Stakes, with $3.60 her quote via Dabble.
2026 Moir Stakes Tips
2026 Moir Stakes Best Bet - Natural Fling
The cleanest profile in a race where most of the established sprinters bring some sort of query belongs to Natural Fling.
Her first-up Quezette Stakes win was excellent and, while this is a sharp rise at just start four, the timing looks right to test her at Group 1 level with only 50kg.
Barrier 13 should be no major concern over the Sandown Hillside 1000m given she can roll forward and there appears to be limited genuine speed outside of her and Cavalry Girl.
Jamie Melham also knows what is required with a three-year-old filly in this race after partnering Coolangatta to victory in the 2022 Moir Stakes.
With the tactical edge, proven ability on wet ground, a significant weight pull and a ceiling that still may not have been found, Natural Fling gets the nod as the best bet.
2026 Moir Stakes Value Bet - Extragalactic
One runner capable of landing in exactly the right spot from an inside draw is Extragalactic.
She was scratched from the Carlyon Stakes because of the track and instead impressed when winning a Pakenham jump-out, so the forecast remains an important watch with most of the rain expected late Friday into Saturday.
From barrier two, she can potentially track Natural Fling and Cavalry Girl without having to spend too much energy early.
There was no disgrace in being beaten a pimple in The Goodwood at just her seventh start, especially after travelling interstate for the first time.
With two campaigns now under her belt and further improvement still to come, Extragalactic looks well placed to spike first-up at a worthwhile price.
2026 Moir Stakes Roughie - Skybird
Fresh may be the right time to catch Skybird, despite the fact she is becoming harder to trust.
Barrier 12 suits her racing pattern and the Sandown Hillside layout gives her the space to settle before building into her work late.
She was luckless when beaten as favourite first-up in last year's Moir Stakes, having previously produced a Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning victory fresh in February 2025.
Her autumn campaign tapered off, but her two best performances came first and second-up, including a third in the T J Smith Stakes on a Soft 7.
With any rain unlikely to hurt and her best recent form coming early in preparations, Skybird has to be respected fresh in the Moir Stakes.
