The 2026 Golden Rose is shaping up with St Gotthard, trained by Chris Waller, at the forefront as a $5 favourite. Waller’s track record, including two wins in the last three editions, boosts expectations. Close behind are promising colts Guest House and Tron Bolt at $6, with Group 1 winners Campione Ditalia and The Next Episode also in contention. Since its elevation to Group 1 in 2009, the 1400m Golden Rose has become a premier three-year-old race and a launchpad for future breeding stars.

Chris Waller has prepared four Golden Rose winners, including two of the last three, and the champion trainer has St Gotthard, who is a $5 favourite with Ladbrokes to win the 2026 Golden Rose.

A well-bred colt, being a younger brother of Group 1-winning sprinter Switzerland, St Gotthard first impressed with a debut victory at Warwick Farm on April 15, and was even more dominant before a spell when successful in the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic, recording a four-length victory.

Guest House has arguably been the most talented horse of his crop, a debut victor at Cranbourne, who was then placed twice before taking out the Golden Slipper.

All of that was recorded despite the penny not fully dropping with this son of Home Affairs, and he's got upside going into his three-year-old season.

He shares a $6 quote with Tron Bolt, a progressive youngster from the Chris Waller yard, whose first campaign culminated with a winning hat-trick, the latest a Group 1 victory in the JJ Atkins on June 13.

The son of Toronado was proven effective on both good and heavy surfaces.

Campione Ditalia ($8) had excuses in a heavy-track debut defeat before atoning in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes.

After catching the eye when fourth-of-16 in the Golden Slipper, he recorded a Group 1 victory in the Inglis Sires' before a narrow defeat when second in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes.

On the fifth line of betting at $11 is The Next Episode, a talented youngster who has won three of his last four attempts.

All victories have come over 1000m, so it remains to be seen whether he'll be stretched over further next season.

Golden Rose Winners

First run in 1978, this feature was originally known as the Peter Pan Stakes after the dual Melbourne Cup winner before being renamed the Golden Rose when its grading was dropped from Group 2 level to an unlisted race, despite prize money increasing to $1 million.

The race quickly established itself as one of the premier contests for three-year-olds in Australia, attracting many of the nation's most promising young horses each spring.

The 1400m contest was elevated to Group 1 status in 2009, and since then it has become a genuine stallion-making race. Success in the Golden Rose has often proven a springboard to a lucrative career at stud.

That is evident with recent winners such as Zoustar, Exosphere, Trapeze Artist, The Autumn Sun and Ole Kirk, all of whom have become highly sought-after stallions following their achievements on the track.

Militarize (2023), Broadsiding (2024) and Beiwacht (2025) are the last three winners of The Golden Rose.
