The 2026 Manikato Stakes brings another major sprinting test to Caulfield on Sunday, September 27, with the Group 1 weight-for-age feature contested over 1200m while Moonee Valley remains under redevelopment.

Beiwacht heads betting at $4 with BetRight after announcing himself as a major spring sprinting player with a dominant first-up victory in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old controlled the 1400m feature from the front and put three lengths on Mr Brightside, adding another Group 1 to a record that already included the Golden Rose and All Aged Stakes.

Oliveanotherday is close behind at $4.40 after opening his preparation with victory in The Heath over 1100m at Caulfield before finishing fifth as a short-priced favourite in the Bobbie Lewis Stakes at Flemington.

Trainer Tom Dabernig indicated the Manikato Stakes remained the plan after that defeat, with the gelding never looking entirely comfortable down the Flemington straight but beaten only a little over a length.

Jimmysstar is next at $7 after resuming with a ninth-place finish in the Memsie Stakes, where he settled off the speed in a race dominated by Beiwacht from the front.

The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding now drops back to 1200m, with his previous top-level sprinting form keeping him prominent in an open market behind the leading pair.

Extragalactic and My Gladiola share the next line at $9 after both coming through the Group 1 Moir Stakes at Sandown on September 5.

My Gladiola produced the stronger result of the pair, claiming her first Group 1 when she drove through late to defeat Cavalry Girl, while Extragalactic was close behind in fourth after settling just off the speed.

Giga Kick rounds out the leading six at $10 after also returning through the Moir Stakes, with the three-time Group 1 sprinter now getting back to 1200m after beginning his campaign over the sharper 1000m trip.

With Beiwacht coming through the Memsie, Oliveanotherday building through the Melbourne sprint races and the Moir Stakes producing several of the other leading chances, the Manikato market brings together a number of different spring form lines.

Manikato Stakes History

First contested in 1968 as the Freeway Stakes, the Manikato Stakes has developed into one of Melbourne’s premier sprint races.

The race was renamed in 1984 in honour of champion sprinter Manikato, a two-time winner of the event and one of the greatest short-course performers in Australian racing history.

After being staged on Cox Plate Eve from 2012 to 2022, the Manikato Stakes spent two years on Cox Plate Day before moving to the AFL Grand Final public holiday Friday in 2024, taking over the traditional timeslot previously occupied by the Moir Stakes.

Run over 1200m under weight-for-age conditions, the Group 1 boasts an outstanding honour roll featuring some of Australia’s most popular sprinters, including Vain, Sunline, Miss Andretti, Hay List, Buffering and Chautauqua.

The most recent winners are Imperatriz in 2023, Southport Tycoon in 2024 and Charm Stone, who claimed the 2025 edition.
