The Winx Stakes takes centre stage at Royal Randwick on Saturday, August 22, with the 1400m Group 1 setting up a terrific clash between Autumn Glow and Sheza Alibi.

2026 Winx Stakes Best Bet - Sheza Alibi

It's great for racing that Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman have elected to head north with Sheza Alibi, setting up a terrific clash with Autumn Glow and suggesting the stable has plenty of confidence in her early in the preparation.

That decision carries some weight given the Group 1 Memsie Stakes was there for the taking in Melbourne next week, yet they have instead chosen to test her immediately against one of the country's headline mares at Randwick.

Barrier one has attracted some negative commentary, but this early in a preparation, connections would much rather see her drawn there than right out, particularly given she has previously shown the ability to take a position and squeeze through a tight gap when required.

She was spelled after a brilliant autumn campaign highlighted by Group 1 wins in the Randwick Guineas and Doncaster Mile, and two improving Pakenham jump-outs should have her forward enough to make full use of the 1400m first-up.

Autumn Glow is the benchmark, but Sheza Alibi has the tactical versatility and X Factor, along with Randwick credentials and scope for further improvement to make this a genuine contest.

The last two defeats beside Idle Flyer require some context, with the first coming in last spring's Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes when she disappointed as a heavily supported favourite in a race where Pride Of Jenni was completely in her element.

That may also have simply been one run too many at the end of the preparation, while her only defeat since came when resuming over 1200m in March, a distance clearly short of her best against Group-class sprinters.

She atoned quickly after that fresh defeat and was ultimately spelled off a personal-best performance when beating some very well cred, something that can often be underrated when assessing how much improvement a progressive mare still has to come.

Two quiet, but sound trials suggests there will be improvement to come from this return , but 1400m is a far more suitable starting point and she possesses the turn-of-foot to be dangerous fresh.

Already the owner of a tidy record and with her last start resulting in a victory over a string of multiple Group 1 winners at set weights, Idle Flyer looks capable of taking another step this preparation and appeals as the value runner at a bolter's quote.
