The 2026 Champagne Stakes promises excitement with Chris Waller's Campione D’Italia leading the odds at $2.60. This follows the colt’s impressive performance in the Inglis Sires’. Other notable contenders include Southend, an unbeaten colt priced at $5.50, and Miss Chanel at $8, who came close in the Inglis Sires’. Salann also shows promise with recent strong finishes at longer distances. This historic Group 1 racing event, dating back to 1861, continues its tradition of thrilling horse race fans as part of the renowned ‘Triple Crown’ series.

The Inglis Sires'–Champagne Stakes double has been completed 42 times, with the most recent being Militarize back in 2023, prepared by Chris Waller.

Waller holds the key to the 2026 Champagne Stakes with Campione D’Italia, who is a $2.60 favourite with Ladbrokes.

After pulling up with excuses on debut at Randwick on February 7, the colt has won two of his next three starts and backed up an eye-catching Golden Slipper fourth with victory in the Inglis Sires' when stepping to 1400m on April 4.

Southend ($5.50) is an unbeaten colt from the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou stable, and he confirmed his 1400m credentials with a Group 3 Baillieu victory on March 28.

Based on that performance, a step up to a mile is unlikely to phase the son of Palace Pier in this Group 1 assignment.

Miss Chanel ($8) remains a maiden but has been competitive throughout a long first preparation, recording five placings and a fourth from six starts.

Her latest effort was a runner-up finish behind Campione D’Italia in the Inglis Sires'.

Salann ($10) was doing her best work late on debut up the Flemington straight and stepped to a mile in last Saturday’s Fernhill Handicap, where she caught the eye from the rear with a runner-up finish over the Randwick mile.

Champagne Stakes Winners

The Group 1 Champagne Stakes dates back to 1861 and underwent several changes to its conditions in the early years.

It was run as a six-furlong sprint from 1883 until 1971, but with the introduction of the richer and more prestigious Golden Slipper in the 1950s, the Champagne Stakes was later extended to 1600 metres to follow both the Slipper and the Sires’ Produce Stakes, forming a natural progression in trip via the “Triple Crown” series.

Early champion winners of the Champagne Stakes include Ajax, Todman and Vain, while Samantha Miss and Pierro are among the more modern stars to have claimed the Group 1 feature.

Militarize (2023), Broadsiding (2024) and Nepotism (2025) have won the past three editions of the Champagne Stakes.
