12 runners have accepted for the 2023 Champagne Stakes, which is headlined by last start Inglis Sires' winner Militarize (barrier 7), who retains the services of Joao Moreira following their upset victory on April 1.

Tannhauser (barrier 1) is another son of Dundeel from the Chris Waller yard, with the champion trainer aiming for a hat-trick of two-year-old Group 1 winners over the Sydney Autumn Carnival, having already prepared Golden Slipper winner Shinzo along with Militarize (Sires' winner).

Godolphin have last start winners in Amur (barrier 9) and Tom Kitten (barrier 6), with the latter an impressive last-to-first victor via last Saturday's Fernhill Stakes, which was contested over this track/trip.

Peter & Paul Snowden prepare the dual Group 1 placed Don Corleone (barrier 11) and Fernhill Stakes runner-up Make A Call (barrier 4), while the Waterhouse & Bott stable also have dual representation via Bases Loaded (barrier 10) and Townsend (barrier 8).

Gary Portelli will be looking to go one better in this feature following the narrow Triple Crown miss of Fireburn in last year's Champagne Stakes and they have accepted with Kintyre (barrier 5), who is a half-brother to Fireburn.

Felix The Scat (barrier 12) is the only interstate raider in the 2023 Champagne Stakes, with this progressive colt having bolted in at Doomben first-up prior to a runner-up finish at Eagle Farm on March 25, where he was a month between runs.

The step to 1600m looks ideal for Pier Pressure (barrier 2) third-up, with the son of Press Statement going 1100m to 1400m via the Inglis Sires' where he made ground for third.

Maiden runner Mah Ali (barrier 3) rounds out the field of 12, a daughter of More Than Ready that should be suited by the mile after making some inroads over 1300m on debut.

Champagne Stakes Winners

The Group 1 Champagne Stakes dates back to 1861 and had many changing conditions in its early years.

It was run as a six furlong sprint from 1883 up until 1971, but with the introduction of the richer and more prestigious Golden Slipper in the 1950's, the Champagne Stakes changed to a 1600 metre event to follow both the Slipper and then Sires Produce with a natural progression in trip via the "Triple Crown" series.

Early champion winners of the Champagne Stakes include Ajax, Todman and Vain, while Samantha Miss and Pierro are a few of the more modern superstars to win this Group 1.

King's Legacy (2020), Captivant (2021) and She's Extreme (2022) have won the last three editions of the Champagne Stakes.
