The scheduled Swan Hill race meeting for Friday has been moved to Murtoa after significant rainfall rendered the original track unsuitable. The eight races will now be held at the Wimmera circuit, which is currently rated a Heavy 8, presenting challenging conditions for runners. Top betting tips include Whimsy Smile in Race 3, proven on wet tracks, and Ate Iron in Race 6, a value selection with strong recent form and the ability to handle heavy ground. Both horses are expected to perform well given their adaptability and fitness.

Murtoa Best Bet - Race 3 No. 14 Whimsy Smile

Wet conditions have brought out two encouraging performances from Whimsy Smile at Seymour this preparation, including a runner-up finish earlier this month.

Beaten just over a length after racing prominently, the three-year-old looked the likely winner before being overhauled by a strong-finishing rival late.

He travelled on speed before going clear in the straight over 1200m and stays at that trip following the transfer to Murtoa, which should suit given the merit in his latest effort.

The Heavy 8 presents no concerns, with the gelding having already placed on a Heavy 9 when resuming last month before handling a Soft 7 last start.

The wide draw is a slight concern, although Whimsy Smile performed well from a double-figure barrier last time and can do so again with Harry Grace taking the ride for the first time.

Murtoa Value Bet - Race 6 No. 5 Ate Iron

There have been some solid wet-track efforts from Ate Iron this preparation, including a third on Heavy ground three starts ago.

That came over 2050m in maiden company, where the gelding finished just under six-and-a-half lengths from the winner.

The son of Spieth then broke through for his first victory when making his synthetic debut at Ballarat last start, scoring over 2100m after being held up for clear running at a crucial stage.

His previous wet-track form becomes even more relevant following the move to Murtoa and the Heavy 8 rating, although his keenness through the early and middle stages last time remains something to consider.

With race fitness on his side and proven ability to handle testing ground, the John Symons and Sheila Laxon-trained gelding remains capable of surprising some better-fancied rivals.
