Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix A-League Round 3 Tips & Prediction - Nix target third straight win

Wellington Phoenix are tipped to avoid defeat in the Double Chance market when they travel to Newcastle Jets for A-League Round 3. The Jets have won only one of their last 12 matches and are coming off a heavy 5-2 loss to Kyoto Sanga in the ACL Elite, raising concerns about fatigue and form. Wellington have won both of their opening games and lead the league. Over 3.5 goals is also recommended, as five of the Jets' last six games have seen four or more goals. Corban Piper is suggested as an anytime goalscorer.

Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix A-League Round 3 Tips & Prediction

Newcastle Jets have failed to win 11 of their last 12 games in all competitions and can't be justified as $1.90 favourites when they welcome league leaders Wellington Phoenix to McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It's a challenging period for the Jets - they're coming off another heavy loss in the ACL Elite in Japan mid-week and now face a short turnaround for this clash. The Newcastle players looked gassed and were blown away, conceding four second-half goals against Kyoto, while Wellington are full of confidence following their historic start to the season.

Take the Nix in the Double Chance market and to register the upset, along with Over 3.5 total goals and in-form Corban Piper finding the back of the net.

Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix Predictions & Best Bets

Bet
Odds
Reasoning
Phoenix Win or Draw$1.82 @ DabbleJets have been struggling since the end of last term, winning just one of their last 12 games in all comps
Phoenix Win$3.30 @ PicklebetPhoenix have won both of their opening games this term, while the Jets are reeling following a 5-2 loss in Japan mid-week to Kyoto in the ACL Elite. Newcastle were lacklustre, flat & devoid of any energy in the 2nd half - they look fatigued, so the Nix can capitalise on the short turnaround
Over 3.5 Goals$2.25 @ CrownBetJets have seen 4+ goals in five of their last six games in all comps - their defence is a mess, but are still good for goals themselves. The last two meetings have also seen 4+ goals
Corban Piper Anytime Goalscorer$2.90 @ UnibetPiper scored in R1 vs Victory & had a goal disallowed for offside before scoring again last week vs Mariners - he's in great form to start the season & a big threat up front against a leaky Jets defence

Newcastle Jets Form Analysis

The Jets are doing it tough coming into this clash.

As expected, their minor-premiership winning squad was raided in the offseason, while they're in the midst of a hectic schedule while they juggle ACL Elite commitments.

Newcastle have drawn their opening two games of the A-League season with the Mariners (2-2) and last week against Macarthur (1-1).

The Jets were then thumped on Tuesday night by Kyoto Sanga on Matchday 3 of the ACL Elite, blowing a fortuitous 2-0 lead courtesy of two penalties before falling 5-2.

Wellington Phoenix Form Analysis

Historic start to the season for Wellington - they've won their opening two A-League games for the first time to lead the competition heading into Round 3.

It's been a dream start for Chris Greenacre's side, with the Nix conquering Australia Cup finalists Melbourne Victory in Round 1 before last week's 2-0 dispatch of Central Coast.

The Nix have made the most of a good draw with two home games against a fatigued Victory and a Mariners side full of kids - now they get another advantageous spot against a Jets side playing their third match in a week and returning from Japan.

Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix Team News

Patrick Wood was on target from the spot twice in the defeat to Kyoto and might force his way back into the starting side in the A-League over Nikos Vergos.

Mark Milligan might opt for some rotation following a busy period. Xavier Bertoncello scored a brilliant goal early vs Macarthur last week.

Newcastle Jets Possible Starting XI (4-1-4-1): James Delianov, Joel Bertolissio, Thomas Aquilina, Alexander Grant, Daniel Wilmering, Max Burgess, Zach Clough, Zane Schreiber, Julian Recchia, Xavier Bertoncello, Patrick Wood

Corban Piper is arguably the most valuable 'utility' player in the league and he's made the starting striker spot his own after scoring in both games so far this term.

Rafael Duran also scored his first goal for the Nix in last week's win over Central Coast.

Wellington Phoenix Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): Henry Gray, Matthew Sheridan, Bill Tuiloma, Lukas Kelly-Heald, James McGarry, Bryce Duke, Max Anderson, Alex Rufer, Kazuki Nagasawa, Corban Piper, Rafael Durán.

Verdict

The Nix are backed in the Double Chance market & are good value for the upset in a game that should see plenty of goals.
