The 2026 Golden Eagle (1500m) at Royal Randwick on 31 October features a high-quality field of four-year-olds. Sheza Alibi is strongly tipped to win, thanks to her proven Group 1 credentials, tactical versatility, and an ideal barrier draw. Amazing Journey is recommended each way, bringing impressive international form and solid Sydney trial performances. Within The Law is also considered each way, with a notable partnership between Rachel King and Bjorn Baker and strong sectionals in key lead-up races. Both alternatives offer value for those seeking options beyond the favourite.

The $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) takes centre stage at Royal Randwick on Saturday, October 31, with a big field of four-year-olds set to clash in one of the richest races on the Australian racing calendar.

First contested in 2019, the Golden Eagle has quickly established itself as a major spring target, with past winners including Kolding, I'm Thunderstruck and Obamburumai. This year's edition brings together an intriguing mix of established Group 1 performers and emerging talent, with 18 acceptors chasing the lucrative prize.

Sheza Alibi dominates the early betting for the 2026 Golden Eagle, with the favourite quoted at $1.80 with Laserbet.

The Golden Eagle 2026 Tips

The Golden Eagle 2026 Best Bet - Sheza Alibi

All eyes will be on Sheza Alibi, the commanding favourite for the 2026 Golden Eagle, despite a somewhat unconventional preparation that sees her drop from 2000m third-up to 1500m fourth-up. While this has been the plan from the start of spring, connections probably weren't expecting such a brutally run Might And Power Stakes at Caulfield, with a race anticipated to be slowly run turning into a genuine staying test.

Outsider Land Legend set a relentless tempo before breaking the Caulfield 2000m track record, and although Sheza Alibi was beaten as a $1.40 favourite, she wouldn't have lost admirers. She looked vulnerable at crucial stages before picking up strongly late, powering home to defeat Birdman, who had previously beaten Cosmic Crusader in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes and subsequently finished runner-up in last Saturday's Cox Plate. Fourth in the Might And Power was Kingswood, who backed up seven days later to win the Caulfield Cup, so the form could hardly be stronger.

Saturday presents a different challenge back at 1500m, but Sheza Alibi has established herself as one of the country's premier gallopers and would need to regress considerably to be beaten. While Autumn Boy had her measure in their only meeting as two-year-olds, she's comfortably defeated him in subsequent clashes, most recently in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes over 1600m at Flemington, and he again shapes as one of her principal threats.

The barrier looks ideal for Luke Nolen aboard a tactically versatile mare who should have every opportunity to settle wherever the tempo allows. Returning to Randwick holds no fears either, with her first two Group 1 victories coming at the venue by commanding margins, while her only defeat there came first-up over an unsuitable 1400m behind Autumn Glow, another outstanding form reference for this age-restricted feature.

Everything points towards the Golden Eagle being her major spring target, and the $10 million contest provides connections with a significant opportunity to capitalise on her remarkable progression. She's clearly the horse to beat, deserves her position at the top of the market and could easily start shorter on Saturday.
The Golden Eagle 2026 Value Bet - Amazing Journey

With so many of the leading Golden Eagle contenders boasting well-established local form, Amazing Journey could offer some value as an international runner making his Australian debut for Ciaron Maher. Anything from this powerful stable commands respect, particularly when connections have specifically targeted a lucrative race such as this, and his overseas performances suggest he's capable of making an immediate impression.

Saffie Osborne travels to Australia for the assignment and knows the gelding particularly well, having partnered him for three of his five career victories, including his latest success at Ascot on July 25. The Golden Eagle was identified as a target following his subsequent sale, an ambitious move that reflects the confidence connections have in his ability to measure up against Australia's leading four-year-olds.

Northern Hemisphere runners have already shown they can succeed in this race, with Obamburumai claiming the 2023 edition before Lake Forest followed in 2024. Amazing Journey has made encouraging progress this year, and his latest Ascot victory was particularly impressive, with the gelding travelling comfortably with cover before responding strongly when asked to improve.

There were still signs of immaturity in that performance, with Amazing Journey running outwards in the straight, but he maintained his advantage to score by a comfortable margin despite doing plenty wrong. That combination of natural ability and scope for further improvement is encouraging, especially for a galloper who has demonstrated he can produce a strong finish when the race is there to be won.

Barrier 15 might appear an obstacle on paper, although wide draws at Randwick over 1500m and 1600m aren't necessarily as disadvantageous as they initially seem. His October trial work in Sydney has also been encouraging, with an effort better than it reads in a sharp heat followed by a narrow second over 1030m at Rosehill on October 19, leaving him an intriguing value proposition in a market dominated by familiar local names.
The Golden Eagle 2026 Roughie - Within The Law

The partnership of Rachel King and Bjorn Baker has been a formidable combination for some time, and their recent statistics make for particularly encouraging reading ahead of Saturday's Golden Eagle. They've struck at better than 28% together this season while returning a positive ROI, and across the past 12 months have combined for 42 winners at 26.3%, with a return on investment approaching 30%.

They join forces with Within The Law, a talented but frustrating mare who failed to win during her three-year-old season despite producing several competitive performances against strong opposition. Much of her better form has come at Randwick, and while she hasn't always converted promising positions into victories, there's little doubt she has the ability to measure up in a race of this nature.

Her Brisbane winter campaign was somewhat disappointing after a terrific return in the Fred Best Classic, although she remained competitive and had genuine excuses in the Group 1 Tattersall's Tiara when starting at single-figure odds. She's often been better than the bare results suggest, and that was again the case when resuming in the Silver Eagle.

The market drift ahead of that return suggested she would benefit from the outing, but Within The Law nevertheless produced an excellent performance, racing on the inferior ground towards the inside before recording the fastest closing sectionals of the race. It was an eye-catching effort in a key Golden Eagle lead-up, and the rise to 1500m second-up looks an ideal progression for the daughter of Lucky Vega.

Her tactical versatility is another significant advantage, with barrier three giving King several options to secure an economical run without sacrificing her finishing strength. The winning strike rate remains a concern, but Within The Law rarely produces a poor performance, and she's a genuine top three/four contender at long odds.
