The famous meeting brings together classic three-year-olds, emerging sprinters, and the nation’s top mares in one of Australian racing’s great showcases.

Below, the fields and barrier draws are set for the Victoria Derby, Coolmore Stud Stakes, and Empire Rose Stakes — a trio of Group 1 contests that capture the depth, history, and quality synonymous with Derby Day at Flemington.

Coolmore Stud Stakes

Beiwacht (barrier 10) led throughout to win the Golden Rose at Rosehill, setting a new 1400m track record in the process. The Chris Waller-trained colt controlled the race from the front and was strong through the line in his first Group 1 success.

Since that victory, he has won a Rosehill trial before completing a quiet straight jump-out at Flemington, rounding out his preparation for the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Tentyris (barrier 5) came from well back in the field to take out the Gothic Stakes at Caulfield, running over the top of his rivals in the closing stages. The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained colt again demonstrated his strong turn of foot and consistency through this campaign.

A three-time stakes winner, he has built a solid record around 1200m and continues to progress well third-up into this Group 1 assignment.

Beadman (barrier 8) opened his campaign with a third placing before finishing second in the Roman Consul Stakes, where he was held up at key stages before getting clear late. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt has raced consistently against good opposition throughout the spring.

Last preparation, he won the Ken Russell Memorial Classic at the Gold Coast by more than eight lengths and worked home stylishly when second in a Flemington jump-out on October 11.

Skyhook (barrier 2) looks suited dropping back to 1200m after contesting the Golden Rose. The Ryan and Alexiou-trained colt was a stylish winner over 1100m first-up and, in The Run To The Rose, should have finished closer behind Tempted — who was last seen finishing runner-up in The Everest — while beating home Beiwacht in that race.

Victoria Derby

After finishing runner-up in a strong maiden on debut, Observer (barrier 4) broke through with a five-length win at Sandown before heading to the paddock following an end-of-preparation run at Flemington.

The Godolphin colt has returned in top order this spring and, after covering ground when second-up and then being held up at key stages when third in the Caulfield Guineas, he recorded a soft victory in the Moonee Valley Vase.

Providence (barrier 12) ran on strongly for second in the Moonee Valley Vase, finishing behind Observer in the Group 2 contest over 2040m.

The Chris Waller-trained colt settled midfield under James McDonald and finished the race off well, handling his first attempt at a staying trip with professionalism.

O’Sheamus (barrier 5) was another late eye-catcher in that race, following a 1600m breakthrough in Sydney and continuing to improve as the distances increase.

Options (barrier 7) contested the Moonee Valley Vase after winning the Listed Super Impose Stakes at Flemington, finishing fifth after being held up in the run before finding the line late.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained runner arrived at that assignment in good form, having recorded three wins and a close third from his previous four starts.

Autumn Mystery (barrier 17) has progressed well this preparation, winning the Victoria Derby Preview over 1800m before taking out the Group 3 Caulfield Classic over 2000m.

Arabian Prince (barrier 20) has shown promise in all three appearances and looks suited stepping up in distance, while Azazel (barrier 10), Savisanta (barrier 3) and Highvol (barrier 15) are the contenders emerging from the Geelong Classic.

Empire Rose Stakes

Fangirl (barrier 6) arrives from the King Charles III Stakes at Randwick on October 18, where she finished midfield after settling towards the rear. A proven Group 1 performer from the Chris Waller stable, she ranks among Australia’s premier milers and has been mostly consistent this preparation.

She comes into this race fourth-up, the same stage of her campaign in April when she captured the Group 1 Queen of the Turf Stakes over this trip at Randwick.

Leica Lucy (barrier 3) was last seen in the Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield on October 18, making late ground to finish third after an eye-catching fourth in the Let’s Elope Stakes first-up. The New Zealand Oaks (2400m) winner has transitioned seamlessly to Australian racing and continues to build an impressive record.

Pride Of Jenni (barrier 7) also contested the King Charles III Stakes at Randwick, racing on the speed before fading late. She returns to Flemington, where she famously completed the Empire Rose–Champions Mile double in 2023 — a rare achievement that highlighted her quality at a mile.

Idle Flyer (barrier 5) booked her spot in this year’s edition with a determined victory in the Angst Stakes at Randwick on October 18. That success delivered her first stakes win and capped a strong campaign for the progressive daughter of Dundeel.
