The Victoria Derby is the second of three Group 1 races on Flemington’s Derby Day card, a traditional spring highlight that showcases Australia’s best staying three-year-olds. The 2500m classic has long been a true test of stamina and timing, often rewarding those with strength and maturity rather than brilliance.

This year’s edition again brings together established form lines through the Moonee Valley Vase and Geelong Classic, along with emerging contenders stepping up in distance for the first time.

At $2.10 with Ladbrokes, Observer heads the 2025 Victoria Derby market.

2025 Victoria Derby Best Bet - Observer

The most talented runner in the 2025 Victoria Derby field looks to be Observer, although the 2500m has often proven a test for the classier types in past editions.

His breeding suggests he’ll handle the journey, being by Ghaiyyath, a four-time Group 1 winner by Dubawi who was successful twice over 2400m.

He’s also out of an unraced full sister to Pierro, whose best progeny have typically thrived over staying distances, and his dam line adds further depth for these longer trips.

After an unlucky third in the Caulfield Guineas — which followed a brave fresh effort when covering ground — Observer recorded a soft victory in the Moonee Valley Vase to confirm his staying credentials.

2025 Victoria Derby Next Best Bet - Azazel

We were with Azazel in the Geelong Classic, and the son of Shocking delivered at each-way odds in that 2200m Listed feature.

After lacking a turn-of-foot in the slowly run Super Impose Stakes, the rise in distance was key to his improvement.

There was merit to that most recent win, where he sustained a wide and early move, and while he isn’t overly brilliant, 2500m shouldn’t stop him.

Include Azazel among the double-figure hopes, along with Savisanta, the Geelong Classic runner-up who has a similar platform to Preferment, Chris Waller’s first Victoria Derby winner, who was also a maiden runner before winning the 2014 edition after finishing second in the Geelong Classic.

2025 Victoria Derby Value Bet - Mcwoody

Busy finishes can be hard to read, and the Caulfield Classic was a blanket result with just 1.21 lengths covering the first six across the line.

Mcwoody finished fifth in that 2000m lead-up, briefly looming as the winner before peaking late — an effort that should bring him right on for 2500m.

He was nearly five weeks between runs following a debut victory, where the Mark Walker-trained colt overcame trouble to score.

Big odds are available for McWoody in the 2025 Victoria Derby, and there’s staying support through his half-brother Dunwoody, a Listed winner over 3000m.
