Caulfield Cup Day takes centre stage on Saturday with a quality 10-race program headlined by one of the biggest handicaps of the Australian spring.

The $6 million Caulfield Cup is the feature, while the Group 1 Thousand Guineas provides another major highlight and the supporting card includes the Blue Sapphire Stakes, Ethereal Stakes and several other key spring races.

Our race-by-race betting tips and selections for Caulfield are below, with broader sports coverage available through Live Racing & Sports Updates.

Caulfield Tips October 17

Race 1 - Sportsbet Classic Tips (2000m)

Tempo could be crucial in the opener, with these early-season three-year-olds stepping to 2000m and previous editions of this race often turning into muddling affairs.

That may not be ideal for 2. Vallice, who is likely to settle off the speed, but the son of Maurice continues to shape as a genuine Victoria Derby prospect. His only real blemish came at Sandown when he failed to settle, while colder rides in his past two starts have allowed him to finish off strongly.

The latest came in the Super Impose Stakes when rising from 1400m to 1800m, and the way he worked through that race suggested another step to 2000m should suit. He looks to have a touch more class than most of these and remains the deserved favourite despite some map concerns.

6. Russian Rock is also worth supporting. He caught the eye at a big price on debut before spelling, sustained a wide run to win his Kilmore maiden first-up and then hit a flat spot at a crucial stage in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes before working home encouragingly.

Everything about those performances suggests 2000m will suit and Craig Williams gets barrier two to work with.

3. Cignetti may not have the same upside as some rivals, but a potentially moderate tempo could play into his hands from barrier one. He has a strong fitness base and Blake Shinn may be able to control the race near the speed.

7. Vantaa is progressing nicely for Matt Laurie and should appreciate getting to 2000m at start three. He's superbly bred, being out of a daughter of the late Miss Finland.

Selections: 2-6-3-7

Race 2 - Sharp EIT Solutions Ethereal Stakes Tips (2000m)

2. Miss Waititi did plenty wrong on debut at Sandown, beginning slowly and racing greenly towards the rear, but still made good late ground over 1400m.

She returned with an encouraging effort at Seymour before producing a much stronger performance second-up on October 3. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained filly now gets back against her own sex and rises to 2000m in a race that lacks obvious depth.

The major unknown is firm ground, with all four of her starts having come on rain-affected tracks, including her latest effort on a Heavy 10. It is still difficult to mark her down for something she has never encountered, particularly when she continues to improve with racing.

8. Fringilla is fighting for favouritism and looks another filly trending the right way. The Hayes-trained three-year-old came out of two hot maidens and relished the rise in distance when breaking through at Geelong, beating Murshidi, who is no slouch.

She should have no issue getting to 2000m, being a half-sister to Honey Creeper, who won at Group 3 level over this distance.

1. Voynichese showed plenty of ability during her first campaign, including a Listed win in Brisbane before finishing seventh in the Group 1 JJ Atkins. Her two runs back have been over trips shorter than ideal and the latest in the Gloaming Stakes suggested she is crying out for 2000m. Nick Olive also prepared last year's Ethereal Stakes winner Spicy Lu.

12. Oceans Fourseven is the blowout. She beat Fringilla home in a strong Bendigo maiden on debut, bolted in at start two and can be forgiven for failing to handle the heavy ground at Flemington last start.

Selections: 2-8-1-12

Race 3 - Manhari Alinghi Stakes Tips (1100m)

It is difficult to get away from 1. Geegees Mistruth, who drops significantly in grade after opening her spring in two much stronger Group 1 sprints.

The Robert Sangster Stakes winner was beaten only two lengths first-up in the Moir Stakes and was again competitive in the Manikato Stakes. She may simply have found that level a little beyond her against those sprinters, but this is a much more suitable assignment back against the mares under set-weights-and-penalties conditions.

Despite carrying 61kg, she is well treated on ratings, has a strong fitness base and retains Blake Shinn. Her 1100m record also reads well, with two wins and two seconds from five attempts.

She is yet to win at Caulfield but has twice placed at stakes level here and looks ideally positioned to return to the winner's stall.

3. Snow Mercy is the bolter. She showed class early as a three-year-old, including a third-up Group 3 victory, before losing her way as last season wore on.

There have been more encouraging signs this preparation. Her July return can be forgiven after EIPH was detected, she won after being freshened and then had no luck at Mornington last start.

5. Stardom was plain in the How Now Stakes second-up but has since moved well in a Flemington jump-out. Her fresh effort at Randwick was much better and her third-up record includes stakes victories as both a two- and three-year-old.

9. Photograph was another who disappointed in the How Now but worked well in a subsequent jump-out. With cover from barrier four, she can be dangerous late.

Selections: 1-3-5-9

Race 4 - Quayclean Gothic Stakes Tips (1400m)

The Gothic Stakes returns to its traditional 1400m distance and the Anthony and Sam Freedman stable has an excellent recent record in the race, preparing three of the past six winners.

That makes 8. Aemond particularly interesting with Mark Zahra aboard. The combination has been striking at a high rate and teamed up to win this race last year with Tentyris.

Zahra was aboard Aemond for his four-length debut victory at Bendigo before the colt found trouble at a crucial stage second-up and lacked the same dash when remaining at 1100m.

The jump from 1100m to 1400m is significant, but he gives the impression he is looking for this trip now. Zahra can be positive from the wide gate and the pedigree offers encouragement, with Aemond by Written Tycoon and out of a half-sister to six-time Group 1 winner Dundeel.

5. Shooting Brake is worth including at a big price. His latest Cranbourne defeat in maiden company looks ordinary on paper, but he was set a huge task there and some of his earlier references are much stronger, including a Sandown placing behind the smart Blind Raise.

Barrier two gives Billy Egan the chance to settle much closer and provide him with a more economical run.

10. Yourworstnightmare is another outsider with upside. He was beaten as favourite on debut but bounced back with an impressive Murray Bridge victory, and it is notable Jake Stephens scratched him from Morphettville to head across the border.

13. I Am Aria heads a competitive market. Her only failure to place at Caulfield came in the Blue Diamond and she ran into a smart horse last start.

Selections: 8-5-10-13

Race 5 - Sportsbet Harry White Stakes Tips (1400m)

There are plenty of established gallopers searching for their best form here, including 1. Private Eye, who returns to the race he won comfortably 12 months ago.

The veteran has earned more than $13 million and boasts an excellent record over the Caulfield 1400m, with his only defeat at the track and trip coming when runner-up in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes.

That performance reads particularly well through Cosmic Crusader, while Private Eye also finished ahead of Evaporate, who won at Sandown at his following start.

There were excuses second-up in the Tramway and he was only fair last time behind a flying Skyhook, but this looks an ideal placement back at one of his favourite tracks. If he is ever going to rediscover winning form, this is the ideal race to find it.

6. Zou Sensation is a three-time Caulfield winner, including two victories from four attempts over this track and trip.

His latest Flemington run was a step back in the right direction after a freshen-up, finishing third on testing ground, and he has traditionally been much more effective on firmer surfaces. A Good track on Saturday should suit.

2. War Machine has not won since last year's Gilgai Stakes and has been inconsistent since, but his fresh run was passable before he was set a difficult task in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. A subsequent jump-out win offers some encouragement.

8. Cartoon Graveyard was competitive in two Caulfield appearances before taking out the Swan Hill Cup in good style and can produce a powerful finish when conditions suit.

Selections: 1-6-2-8

Race 6 - Henley Homes Sprint Tips (1000m)

The last of 13 beside 3. Gallant Son's name from the Manikato Stakes looks ugly, but there are legitimate reasons to forgive the run.

He resumed at Group 1 level over 1200m having never previously raced at the distance and appeared to travel well enough before his condition gave out badly late. Luke Nolen indicated afterwards that he expected the gelding to take plenty of improvement from the run.

Gallant Son has otherwise been a genuine sprinter. He won second-up over 1100m at Caulfield in January before producing consecutive Group 1 placings, firstly in the Oakleigh Plate over this track and trip and then when splitting Caballus and Angel Capital in the Newmarket Handicap.

That is outstanding form for this race. He also has enough tactical speed to settle handy without becoming involved if the leaders overdo things.

4. Oak Hill could be suited by the anticipated strong tempo. He has an excellent fresh record, is a dual Caulfield winner and is best when ridden cold before producing one sustained run.

The wider gate is therefore no negative, while Damien Lane knows him exceptionally well, having partnered Oak Hill for five of his eight career victories.

5. Bev's Nine has built a remarkably consistent record and finished outside the placings only once before his latest preparation. He returned with a solid Caulfield performance on September 19 and now drops 3.5kg.

2. Cavalry Girl heads the market after putting together a terrific sequence, including a hat-trick before her Group 1 Moir Stakes second. The form is excellent, although returning to firmer ground is a query.

Selections: 3-4-5-2

Race 7 - Stow Storage Thousand Guineas Tips (1600m)

9. Regal Ambition has made significant improvement since her sole two-year-old appearance and looks ready to take another step in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas.

The Lindsay Park filly returned with a stylish Sandown win over 1200m before progressing again in the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes, sweeping from last to end Pretty Baby's winning streak by a length.

Platinum Pearl was another 1.5 lengths away in third and Regal Ambition was conceding race fitness to both rivals, suggesting there may still be further improvement to come.

The daughter of Palace Pier appreciated being left alone before building momentum last start, so barrier 11 is not necessarily a disadvantage if runners are making ground. She has already won at Caulfield, possesses one of the better turns of foot in the field and looks ready to peak third-up at 1600m.

5. Icelady looks well over the odds and it would be no surprise to see support arrive for the Ciaron Maher-trained filly.

Her second at Geelong came over a trip shorter than ideal and the form has since strengthened, while she relished the rise to 1400m when winning the Thousand Guineas Prelude at an each-way quote for us.

She controlled that race before holding stablemate Saintly Dancer by three-quarters of a length, yet the early market has Saintly Dancer considerably shorter.

Icelady is only third-up and her pedigree gives every indication the mile will suit, being by Maurice and from the family of Group 1 winner Kenedna. Ethan Brown retains the ride and she can again roll forward from barrier 10.

12. Katoto has been earmarked by Chris Waller as a potential VRC Oaks filly and may still be working towards her ultimate target, but she has enough upside to respect at big odds.

She has returned with two encouraging runs and chased soundly behind Regal Ambition in the Jim Moloney, where she lacked the sharper fillies' acceleration but worked strongly through the line. The rise to 1600m should suit and Tyler Schiller heads south for the ride.

8. Over The Bridge faces a huge challenge at only start three and jumping from 1200m to a mile, but there is obvious talent there. She was brave winning at Group 3 level last start after enduring a tough run and has plenty of natural ability.

Selections: 9-5-12-8

Race 8 - Catanach's Jewellers Blue Sapphire Stakes Tips (1200m)

Another strong chance for Mark Zahra on Caulfield Cup Day is 6. Doubt Time.

The Nick Ryan-trained colt landed a significant betting plunge on debut at Caulfield in July, coming from back in the field to win impressively over 1100m.

He was thrown straight into stronger company first-up in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes down the Flemington straight and, while never a genuine winning chance, his closing work was impossible to miss.

Doubt Time recorded the second-fastest final 200m of the race and the second-fastest last 200m of the entire meeting.

He will again need the track pattern to favour horses making ground, but there appears enough speed engaged to generate a genuine tempo. Zahra can allow him to settle before launching late and the rise to 1200m looks ideal.

9. Barracks showed enough without winning during his first campaign before heading north and finishing fourth behind smart stablemate Next Episode.

He returned with a tough all-the-way Rosehill maiden victory on September 30 and that form was subsequently boosted when the runner-up won impressively. Barrier five should allow Craig Williams to secure another economical on-speed position.

10. Half Pipe comes through the Group 3 Heritage Stakes won by Blue Doors. He still does plenty wrong but clearly has his fair share of ability and has shown enough in Sydney to warrant respect. Michael Dee taking over is a positive.

12. Over Excited heads the market and brings strong form through Icelady and Satono Glow. The concern is whether her latest defeat was simply due to the heavy track or evidence she may already be reaching the end of her first campaign.

Selections: 6-9-10-12

Race 9 - Sportsbet Caulfield Cup Tips (2400m)

The return to firmer ground is a slight query for 2. Cosmic Crusader, but the Turnbull Stakes winner has to be the starting point in the 2026 Caulfield Cup.

The Bob Peters-bred and owned galloper has gone to another level since joining Andrea Leek, winning the Bletchingly Stakes and P.B. Lawrence Stakes before a luckless Memsie Stakes third and runner-up finish behind Birdman in the Underwood.

He then stamped himself as a genuine Caulfield Cup contender by dominating a strongly run Turnbull Stakes over 2000m, beating Aeliana and Sir Delius comfortably while defending Caulfield Cup winner Half Yours finished another 6.5 lengths away.

Handicap conditions also suit, with Cosmic Crusader dropping to 56kg after carrying 58kg in the Turnbull.

Barrier 17 is awkward, although that could improve with scratchings. The 2400m is the obvious unknown, but he powered through a strongly run 2000m last start and brings clearly the strongest local form.

17. Ohope Wins may ultimately be even better suited in the Melbourne Cup, but the Chris Waller-trained mare gets into this beautifully with just 51.5kg.

Her Makybe Diva Stakes run over the mile was encouraging before she again found 2000m too sharp against established middle-distance horses in the Turnbull.

The step to 2400m is exactly what she needs, with both previous attempts at the distance producing Group 1 victories in the New Zealand Oaks and Australian Oaks.

She also receives a significant weight swing from the Turnbull, now getting 4.5kg from Cosmic Crusader and carrying 6kg less than Half Yours. With proven staying form and no weight on her back, she is one of the leading local each-way chances.

10. Wine Dark Sea could be the international runner best suited specifically to the Caulfield Cup.

The Harry Charlton-trained four-year-old has won three of four starts this year, including the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury under 61kg, and drops to 54.5kg here.

He has tactical speed, prefers firmer ground and looks naturally suited to 2400m. Damian Lane can look to offset barrier 19 by finding a forward position.

7. Enfjaar brings a similar profile to former stablemate Without A Fight, having done much of his racing around 2000m before proving himself at this trip with a victory at Glorious Goodwood. Barrier one gives Ray Dawson every chance to secure an economical run.

Selections: 2-17-10-7

Race 10 - Nationwide Tristarc Stakes Tips (1400m)

At big odds in the last, 3. Oh Too Good looks capable of producing a much better fresh run than the market suggests.

She went winless last campaign but improved deeper into the preparation, including runner-up finishes in the Gold Bracelet and a BM100 at Flemington before failing on heavy ground.

Despite now being seven, she remains relatively lightly raced and has finished outside the placings only once in five first-up attempts.

That defeat came over 1100m, well short of her best. Five of her six career wins have come between 1500m and 1600m, making this 1400m return far more suitable.

Her two lead-up jump-outs have been encouraging, including an October 6 win, while Damian Lane has ridden her to four victories, including a Group 3 success over the Caulfield mile.

In a wide-open race, she looks capable of giving this a shake at big odds.

12. Concord Connie may have more upside than anything in the field after completing a hat-trick last preparation.

She was beaten at $1.30 in BM78 company first-up at Mornington, which makes her short quote here difficult to embrace under these weight conditions, but that was only her fifth career start and improvement is likely.

9. Gold Medallist has built nicely through three runs this campaign and was honest at Flemington on testing ground last start. She handles all surfaces, is tactically versatile and was a big winner over this track and trip in March.

10. Terilee comes through the same Mornington race as Concord Connie and rattled home for the fastest final 400m of the program. There was little between them there and she has to be included.
