Saturday's blockbuster racing program features the $6 million Caulfield Cup and $20 million Everest, but there are plenty of opportunities to look beyond the favourites across Australia's five major meetings.

We've identified five runners at bigger odds who can make their presence felt, with our Saturday Best Bets also covering the leading selections across Caulfield, Randwick, Doomben, Morphettville and Ascot.

Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 5 No. 2 Saturday Sesh

Saturday Sesh took time to find his feet early in his career, but the Ashley Maley-trained gelding has developed into a capable performer, adding victories at Kalgoorlie on June 21 and July 12 after producing several competitive efforts in stronger company.

His September 19 return at Belmont was encouraging in a race arguably stronger than Saturday's assignment, while his latest Kalgoorlie failure is worth forgiving after settling back and wide in a contest dominated by the leaders, with the winner controlling proceedings and the runner-up enjoying the box seat.

Barrier two provides a much better opportunity to secure an economical run third-up, with Jefferson Tsang's 3kg claim bringing the son of Sessions down to an attractive 55.5kg.

Tactically versatile and capable of improving with racing, Saturday Sesh looks well placed to produce a much stronger performance at an each-way price.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 10 No. 3 Oh Too Good

A return to 1400m could prove ideal for Oh Too Good, who has an excellent fresh record despite going winless during her latest preparation, with several encouraging performances suggesting the seven-year-old still has plenty to offer.

Runner-up finishes in the Gold Bracelet and a BM100 at Flemington were among her better efforts last campaign, while her subsequent failure on heavy ground can be forgiven, with the mare having missed the placings only once in five previous first-up appearances.

That sole fresh defeat came over 1100m, well short of her preferred range, with five of her six career victories recorded between 1500m and 1600m, making Saturday's 1400m assignment particularly appealing.

Two encouraging jump-outs, including an October 6 victory, provide further confidence, while Damien Lane returns aboard a mare he has ridden to four wins, including a Group 3 success over the Caulfield mile.

Doomben Roughie Tip

Doomben Roughie - Race 5 No. 14 Podium Star

A dominant Sunshine Coast trial victory created plenty of excitement around Podium Star last year, and the Stuart and Bayley Kendrick-trained galloper justified $1.35 favouritism with an impressive all-the-way debut success before spending more than 400 days on the sidelines.

The son of Lonhro has needed racing to find his feet this preparation, with an August 18 trial placing behind stablemate Just Precious, who subsequently won both starts, providing a useful reference.

His two runs back have been better than the results suggest, particularly at Doomben on October 5, and the application of blinkers first time could provide the improvement needed third-up.

Jag Guthmann-Chester reunites with Podium Star and has barrier three to work with, while his best early performances came on Soft ground, making him an interesting each-way proposition with fitness now on his side.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 7 No. 5 Dobbinair

A failed attempt at the mile in the Balaklava Cup is worth forgiving for Dobbinair, who travelled into that September 16 feature reasonably well before tiring, with connections now freshening him up and dropping sharply back to 1050m.

His previous sprinting form reads much better, including an August 29 runner-up finish behind The Cosmic One, who subsequently extended his winning streak to four.

An earlier third also provided strong references through Light The Night and Bootlegger, with the latter going on to win at Listed level, while Dobbinair's latest victory came on a Soft 7 surface in May.

The son of Grunt has generally been more effective on firmer ground and remains relatively lightly raced for a five-year-old, having opened his career with consecutive victories, and although the sharp distance drop presents a challenge, a genuine tempo could bring him into calculations at double-figure odds.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 8 No. 6 Roulette King

There is plenty of intrigue surrounding Roulette King ahead of Saturday's Silver Eagle, with the Trevor Rogers-trained four-year-old returning from a spell following a rapid progression through the grades during his first preparation.

After impressing on debut, he reeled off another four victories, progressing from benchmark company to Group 2 level before connections elected to spell him with the Golden Eagle firmly in their sights.

His preparation has been carefully managed, beginning with jump-outs in August before another three hit-outs during September, suggesting the stable has given him every opportunity to return in suitable condition.

Regular rider Jamie Mott travels north to maintain his association with the gelding, and although the strength of his Victorian form against some established Group 1 performers remains a genuine unknown, Roulette King has untapped potential and looks worth a speculative play at big odds.
