The George Ryder Stakes is a 1500m weight-for-age feature and is run as the third Group 1 race on the Golden Slipper Day program at Rosehill Gardens.

Not much went right for Linebacker in the Canterbury Stakes resumption, where he was hampered at the start and in restricted room throughout.

He did well under the circumstances for a 1.5-length defeat.

The four-year-old quickly responded second-up last campaign with a big win via the Silver Eagle and was respected as a $6 chance in the Golden Eagle taken out by Autumn Glow.

He did not have his best day there but was not disgraced, and is open for improvement here with 1500m a big tick and Zac Lloyd back aboard.

Headley Grange has been a massive improver from the Joe Pride stable, progressing quickly through the grades.

He won the Cameron Handicap at Newcastle in fast time, with the subsequent form through Vivy Air holding up well.

The Joe Pride-trained galloper then knocked off Gringotts when winning the Alan Brown Stakes.

Headley Grange was big odds in the Canterbury Stakes and was the pick of the closers, recording the fastest late sectionals of that Group 1.

The gelding returns to Rosehill, having won his last two attempts here, and is worth including in exotics despite a tricky draw.
