Scotland face Haiti in their much-anticipated World Cup 2026 opener at Gillette Stadium, aiming to break their group stage curse. Opponents Haiti, returning after a 52-year World Cup absence, see this as their best chance to progress. Scotland, with a better recent form and key striker Lawrence Shankland in top shape, are tipped to win, though nerves could play a part. Recommended tip: Scotland and Under 2.5 goals, with Shankland likely to find the net. Watch live and bet on the match at bet365 (geo-restrictions apply).

Haiti vs Scotland World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Scotland begin their quest to reach the knockout phase of the World Cup for the first time when they come up against Haiti in their opening Group C game on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.

It's always heartbreak for Scotland in major tournaments, with the Tartan Army failing to make it out of the group stage in each of their 12 previous appearances at the World Cup or European Championships. However, the expanded 48-team competition and the presence of minnows Haiti in their group means Scotland have their best opportunity yet to snap that drought.

Haiti meanwhile will also view this as their must-win game if they are to extend their unlikely World Cup appearance into the knockout phase. The Grenadiers are coming off a thumping 4-0 win over New Zealand and will be confident, but this represents a big step up in class.

I think Scotland are excellent value at around $1.60 to emerge victorious, but I don't think it will be easy. There will surely be some nerves and tension in their first World Cup game since 1998 and the Scots have struggled in attack under the pragmatic style of manager Steve Clarke.

Scotland and Under 2.5 goals appeals at decent value, while I'm torn between Lawrence Shankland and Scott McTominay to find the back of the net. I'm settling on Shankland, who is coming off a career-best season with Hearts and has scored in his last two appearances for the national team.
  • Scotland have won six of their last nine games
  • Haiti have lost two of their three games in 2026
  • Haiti have conceded exactly two goals in two of their last four defeats
  • Lawrence Shankland has scored three goals in his last two games for Scotland & had 16 goals in 29 appearances for Hearts this past season in the SPL

Haiti vs Scotland Head To Head

This will be the first ever meeting between the two nations.

Haiti Form Analysis

Haiti return to the World Cup after a 52-year absence after they lost all three group games in their only previous appearance in 1974.

The Grenadiers won six of their 10 games in CONCACAF qualifying, including back-to-back triumphs over Costa Rica and Nicaragua in November 2025 to secure their ticket.

Haiti have managed just one win from four games in 2026, but it was a convincing 4-0 triumph over New Zealand. However, their likely struggles at this World Cup were highlighted in 2-1 and and 1-0 defeats to Peru and Tunisia respectively.

Haiti Team News

Wolves midfielder Jean‐Ricner Bellegarde and Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor should both start, while Duckens Nazon has scored a record 44 goals in 78 appearances for his country.

Nazon also top scored in CONCACAF qualifying with six goals, registering more shots and touches inside the box than any other player.

Scotland Form Analysis

It's a first World Cup appearance for Scotland since France 1998, where they were also grouped in with Brazil and Morocco, finishing bottom.

It's been a long time between drinks, but after qualifying for Euro 2024, Scotland finished top of their UEFA World Cup qualifying group for the first time since 1982, conquering Denmark in a memorable 4-2 victory at Hampden, highlighted by an overhead kick goal from Scott McTominay and Kenny McLean scoring from beyond the halfway line.

After defeats against Japan and Ivory Coast earlier this year, Scotland restored some confidence with big 4-1 and 4-0 victories over Curacao and Bolivia, which should serve as good preparation for this opening fixture.

Scotland Team News

Lawrence Shankland scored three goals in those friendly wins over Curacao and Bolivia and should be rewarded with a start up front after a standout season with Hearts.

Billy Gilmour was ruled out with a knee injury in a big blow pre-tournament, with the likes of Lewis Ferguson, Kenny McLean, Ryan Christie and rising teenager Tyler Fletcher all in contention to take his place.

Verdict

There will be nerves and tension, but Scotland should prove too strong and get the job done, with Shankland adding to his recent goals.
