Australia vs Turkiye World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - Socceroos face difficult opening test in Group D

Australia begins their World Cup campaign against a dynamic Turkiye side in Group D. While the Socceroos are coming off their best World Cup result in 2022, they face a formidably young and talented Turkiye squad tipped to top the group and keep a clean sheet. Stats favor Turkiye, who enter with strong recent results and potent attackers like Baris Yilmaz. Australia's attack lacks confidence and is unlikely to break down Turkiye’s defense. The key recommendation: back Turkiye for a win, possibly to nil.

Australia vs Turkiye World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

The Socceroos will have their work cut out against a talented and youthful Turkiye side when the two teams battle it out at BC Place in Vancouver in their Group D opener on Saturday night.

Australia are making their sixth straight appearance at the World Cup and coming off their best result at Qatar 2022, where they won two matches at the tournament for the first time, beating Tunisia and Denmark to reach the R16 before going down to eventual champions Argentina in a tight contest.

Meanwhile, Turkiye are back at the World Cup for the first time since 2002, where they made a shock run to the semi-finals. Blessed with some immense attacking talent and some of the brightest young prospects in world football, Turkiye are coming off a quarter-final run at Euro 2024 and I'm tipping them to top Group D, which also features USA and Paraguay.

This is a very tough opening test for the Socceroos. Tony Popovic has the team playing a defensive, pragmatic and cagey style of play and if that continues, the Turks could slice them apart. The Socceroos have some great attacking talent with the likes of Nestory Irankunda, Mo Toure, Cristian Volpato and Jordy Bos gliding down the left flank, but I'm not sure if the former even starts and Toure missed training during the week. Volpato has also just one cap after a late call-up to the squad.

I just don't see Australia creating enough meaningful chances here - backing Turkiye to secure all three points, with some added juice on a win to nil. Galatasaray winger Baris Yilmaz has been in prolific form for his country lately and looks a solid punt to find the back of the net.
  • Australia have lost their last four World Cup openers
  • Australia are winless in five of their last seven games
  • Australia have lost four of their last five games in North America, failing to score in three
  • Australia have lost eight of their 12 games vs European opposition at World Cups
  • Turkiye have won 11 of their last 14 games, including seven of their last eight
  • Four of Turkiye's last five wins have been to nil
  • Baris Yilmaz has scored in his last two games for Turkiye
  • Turkiye have scored exactly two goals in three of their last six games

Australia vs Turkiye Head To Head

This will be the first meeting since Turkiye won a pair of friendlies in 2004 by 3-1 and 1-0 scores.

Australia Form Analysis

Tony Popovic stepped in for Graham Arnold and guided the Socceroos to direct qualification into a World Cup for the first time since 2014.

However, it wasn't convincing for most of the campaign and save for two home friendly wins over a depleted Cameroon and Curacao, it's been slim pickings for the Socceroos lately.

Australia were outclassed in defeats against USA, Venezuela and Colombia at the end of 2025 and were defeated 1-0 by Mexico before a 1-1 draw with Switzerland last weekend, with Tete Yengi scoring his first international goal on debut.

Australia Team News

Mo Toure was absent from training during the week, but is expected to take his place in the starting side.

It will be interesting to see if Popovic stars Nestory Irankunda, or prefers to utilise the electric Watford winger as a super sub off the bench. Connor Metcalfe probably has the edge over Cristian Volpato for a starting spot.

Jordy Bos is arguably Australia's best player and is coming off a great season with Feyenoord, helping the Dutch side secure Champions League football for next season and will walk into the left wingback role.

Alessandro Ciracti captains the side from the centre of defence, likely alongside Harry Souttar and Cameron Burgess. Veteran Mat Ryan will start between the sticks.

Turkiye Form Analysis

Turkiye produced some outstanding football to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 and they backed it up with a great World Cup qualifying campaign, winning six of their eight matches and losing only to Spain.

Vincenzo Montella's side come into this contest having won seven of their last eight games, including 4-0 and 2-1 victories over North Macedonia and Venezuela in warm-up friendlies.

Returning to the World Cup for the first time since making the semi-finals in 2002, Turkiye are genuine dark horses to feature at the business end of the tournament.

Turkiye Team News

Real Madrid's 21-year-old attacker Arda Guler could be a breakout star of this World Cup and will look to make his mark early.

Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz was injured during the lead-up to the World Cup and will have to prove his fitness here.

Captain Hakan Calhanoglu will feature in midfield after another strong season with Inter in the Serie A.

Deniz Gul is expected to lead the line, with Baris Yilmaz starting on the wing.
