Belmont Roughie Tip
Belmont Roughie - Race 8 No. 5 Magical Sequence
The early each-way quote for Magical Sequence looks generous, even allowing for William Pike coming off after her latest appearance.
She completed a hat-trick when winning over this distance and in the same grade on July 11, while her subsequent midfield finish over 1400m can be forgiven after settling back and covering ground.
The daughter of Rommel won four of five starts during a strong summer campaign, with two victories over 1200m, the distance responsible for four of her six career wins.
She has also won on a Soft 7 and placed on a Heavy 8, while Brayden Gaerth knows her well from her first two campaigns and reunites with the mare in the Belmont finale.
Caulfield Roughie Tip
Caulfield Heath Roughie - Race 7 No. 4 Savour The Dream
Savour The Dream has not been the easiest horse to catch, but his best form is good enough to win this and a double-figure quote compensates for the risk.
He was well held at Caulfield on July 25 when set a difficult task off a month between runs, while there were also excuses for his previous failure at the venue when EIPH was detected post-race.
The son of Super Seth showed plenty of talent through some ambitious placements as a three-year-old and, after being gelded, produced two pass marks this campaign before a dominant third-up BM74 victory at Mornington.
He drops in grade on Saturday, while Mornington runner-up Oak Beach franked that form with a three-and-a-half-length Caulfield Heath victory at her next appearance.
Eagle Farm Roughie Tip
Eagle Farm Roughies - Race 8 No. 4 Mister Bianco & No. 9 Mishani Crown
Mister Bianco was beaten as favourite first-up, but 1000m is short of his best and he still stuck to the task well behind sharp short-course sprinter Durova.
The rise to 1200m suits, while his second-up record reads two wins and a second, with his most recent victory coming over this distance in December.
Mishani Crown is another double-figure chance after making significant progress last season, completing a country and provincial hat-trick before narrowly missing a fourth consecutive win in metropolitan company.
She defeated subsequent Listed winner Arabian Rose in that January 24 event, had excuses when held up at Doomben first-up and now drops 1.5kg with a senior rider aboard over her preferred 1200m on Good ground.
Morphettville Roughie Tip
Morphettville Roughie - Race 7 No. 6 Shady Thinker
The Group 3 Behemoth Stakes has attracted an even field, with Sir Now and Cical sharing favouritism and several other runners holding legitimate claims.
At a much bigger price, Shady Thinker appeals following an encouraging jump-out and a career that has already shown plenty of upside.
He won his first two starts stylishly and could easily have remained unbeaten through his opening campaign, with the only defeat coming when unsuited by a drop in distance.
Shady Thinker also won first-up over this trip last campaign before an unlucky Rosehill fifth in a strong BM78 that produced dual winter stakes winner Midnight Dynamite, with several other runners carrying solid stakes and Group form.
Randwick Roughie Tip
Randwick Roughie - Race 7 No. 11 Poison Chalice
The first-time blinkers are an important factor with Poison Chalice, particularly coming from a Joe Pride stable that regularly uses the gear change once a horse has built a fitness platform.
The ex-Victorian always showed above-average ability without proving easy to catch in Melbourne, and his three performances since joining Pride have gradually built towards this assignment.
His past two efforts have been okay without threatening under hefty imposts of 62kg and 61kg, but he drops sharply to only 53kg now that he is hard fit.
Poison Chalice also owns a win and a second from three attempts over 1800m, while Alysha Collett takes over after enjoying a strong July with 15 winners and 26 placings.
