Belmont Favourite - Race 2 No. 7 Southern Firetail

A strong trial victory on July 13 indicated that Southern Firetail had furnished nicely from a first campaign where his performances were a little mixed.

We were with the Adam Durrant-trained galloper when he resumed at Belmont on July 25 at a big each-way price, and after receiving good late support, he looked to have the race won when looming in the straight.

His fitness gave out slightly late, while winner Tidwell was fitter, stuck to the fence and never went around a horse, with those factors potentially proving the difference.

A much shorter quote is available this time, which is no surprise in a No Metro Wins Last Year affair that's easier than his latest assignment, while Southern Firetail may be the runner with the most upside.

Articole has some class and is probably the main danger, albeit remains a query at 1400m, while Southern Firetail is yet to race on rain-affected ground, making the late market worth monitoring if the forecast rain arrives.

JJ Kelly Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Belmont Best Bet - Race 5 No. 6 All Grunt

Although likely to improve again from this second-up assignment and potentially come into his own over further, the extra furlong is still in All Grunt’s favour on Saturday.

He was completely unsuited when resuming over 1400m on July 18, settling back in a slowly run race before recording the fastest final 400m and 200m behind Mt Shirataku.

The market elect enjoyed every favour in that clash, while All Grunt now receives a 2.5kg weight swing over his market rival.

The grey has done little wrong throughout his career, finishing in the money in six of 12 appearances, including a hat-trick of stakes placings as a late three-year-old.

All Grunt went to the paddock in February following a confidence-boosting win after several frustrating Ascot defeats, including being badly on heels late when second-up on January 24, and he can be supported each-way in the first leg of the quaddie.

Swan Draught - Belmont Newmarket Tips (Race 7)

Belmont Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 9 Jaz Session

One of the key form references for the Belmont Newmarket is the Beaufine Stakes, which Jaz Session contested first-up on July 11.

After settling off the speed in that 1000m event, she never threatened but still found the line as well as anything behind Immortal Bliss.

A second-up failure followed in the H.G. Bolton Sprint, although there were clear excuses after the mare returned making respiratory noises.

A tongue-control bit and tongue tie are both applied on Saturday, suggesting she may have choked down in that latest performance, which was her first finish outside the top two from seven starts over 1200m.

Jaz Session had previously recorded three wins and three seconds over six furlongs, including a Listed victory at Ascot on January 24, and from a low draw, Shaun O’Donnell can settle her closer and produce sharp improvement.

Belmont Value Bet - Race 8 No. 5 Magical Sequence

The early each-way price available for Magical Sequence is puzzling, even allowing for William Pike coming off.

That appears an overreaction for a mare who completed a hat-trick when winning over this distance and in this grade on July 11 as a well-backed second favourite.

Her latest midfield finish over 1400m can be forgiven after she settled back and covered ground throughout, while a kinder draw is in her favour on Saturday.

The daughter of Rommel won four of five starts during a consistent campaign over summer, with two of those victories coming over this distance and four of her six career wins recorded at 1200m.

Magical Sequence has also won on a Soft 7 and placed on a Heavy 8, while Brayden Gaerth rode her throughout her first two campaigns and reunites with an over-the-odds chance in the Belmont finale.
