Charles Leclerc could take an engine penalty at a circuit where he has claimed four consecutive poles, Lando Norris and McLaren arrive with genuine race-winning pace, and Kimi Antonelli carries an 81-point championship lead after back-to-back victories.
Add Max Verstappen's improving Red Bull, Baku's unpredictable Safety Car threat and an unusual Saturday race, and there are plenty of major talking points heading into one of the most unforgiving street races of the season.
Charles Leclerc's Grid Penalty Could Change Baku
Leclerc would usually be one of the first names considered for qualifying in Azerbaijan. His record here is exceptional, particularly over one lap, with four straight pole positions between 2021 and 2024.
The issue is Ferrari's engine allocation.
The power unit used during Leclerc's heavy Monza crash escaped major permanent damage, but reports indicate it may now be suitable mainly for practice running. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has identified Baku as a circuit where taking a grid penalty could make sense because the long straight provides greater recovery opportunities.
Leclerc himself has acknowledged that another engine penalty will probably be necessary at some stage if Ferrari cannot save the Monza unit.
That makes him difficult to include among the leading race selections. Even if Leclerc qualifies near the front on raw pace, a fresh power unit could send him significantly further down the starting order.
Baku offers opportunities to recover, but carving through this field will not be as straightforward as Antonelli's sensational charge from 19th to victory at Monza.
Why Baku Should Suit McLaren
McLaren's Madrid result didn't tell the whole story.
Norris started from pole and controlled the opening phase of the race, pulling away from Antonelli before the timing of the Virtual Safety Car handed Mercedes the strategic advantage.
Baku offers a different challenge, but several characteristics should suit the MCL40.
The technical middle sector rewards mechanical grip, rotation and confidence through slower corners, all areas where McLaren has become increasingly impressive since its mid-season upgrades.
The question is the main straight.
Mercedes still appears to deploy electrical energy more efficiently, while Red Bull also carries strong outright power. McLaren may therefore need its lower-drag rear-wing solution to remain competitive through Sector 3.
If it does, Norris has the pace to win.
Antonelli Remains the Championship Benchmark
Two consecutive victories have pushed Antonelli's championship advantage to 81 points over Russell, with Hamilton and Norris now more than 100 points behind.
Madrid wasn't as dominant as the final result suggests. Norris had genuine pace, while Mercedes benefited from the VSC timing.
But Antonelli still executed perfectly when the opportunity appeared.
That has become the defining trait of his season. Even on weekends where another car appears slightly faster, Antonelli keeps finding ways to score heavily.
Baku also plays directly towards Mercedes' greatest technical strength. Energy deployment is crucial across the enormous flat-out run towards Turn 1, and the works Mercedes team continues to extract more from its hybrid system than anyone else.
Norris is the prediction.
Antonelli is the reason it isn't an easy one.
Max Verstappen Remains the Podium Wildcard
Red Bull's recent form has quietly improved.
Verstappen followed his Monza podium with another strong drive in Madrid and should again be competitive around Baku. The RB22's powerful power unit should help on the main straight, while the circuit's sequence of sharp 90-degree corners may expose fewer of the high-speed balance weaknesses that troubled the car earlier in the season.
The biggest question surrounds Verstappen's teammate.
Isack Hadjar's wrist injury has kept him out of recent races, with Liam Lawson deputising. If Hadjar returns in Baku, one of Formula 1's least forgiving street circuits is hardly an ideal venue to rebuild confidence.
Regardless of who drives the second car, Verstappen remains Red Bull's best chance.
Azerbaijan Grand Prix Tyre Strategy
Pirelli has selected:
Hard: C3
Medium: C4
Soft: C5
Baku traditionally produces low tyre degradation because of its smooth surface, despite the rear tyres working hard under acceleration from the numerous slow corners.
Last year's race required only 21 pit stops, with the Medium-to-Hard one-stop emerging as the straightforward strategy.
Something similar looks likely in 2026.
The wildcard is the Safety Car.
Walls sit close throughout much of the lap and a crash around the Castle section can instantly transform strategy. Teams therefore need enough flexibility to react rather than committing too early.
Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2026 Schedule
This year's event runs Thursday to Saturday, rather than the traditional Friday-to-Sunday format, with the change made to avoid racing on Azerbaijan's Memorial Day on Sunday, September 27.
