NFL Fixtures

The NFL regular season kicks off at the beginning of September and runs across 17 weeks. Thereafter there's the wildcard weekend which pits the best teams that didn't directly qualify for the post-season against each other for a spot in the divisional playoffs.

After that there's three separate playoff rounds, the divisional and conference playoffs before the Super Bowl, which determines who wins the NFL title.

NFL History

The National Football League (NFL) is the premier professional American football competition and one of the most-watched sports leagues in the world. Its origins date back to 1920, when several Midwestern teams formed the American Professional Football Association (APFA). Two years later, the league rebranded to the NFL, marking the beginning of its modern identity.

Throughout the early decades, the NFL grew steadily, but the sport truly exploded in popularity after the 1958 NFL Championship Game, famously called “The Greatest Game Ever Played”. This overtime thriller between the Colts and Giants ignited nationwide interest in pro football.

A major turning point came in 1960, when the rival American Football League (AFL) was launched. Competition for players and fans escalated quickly, pushing both leagues to new heights. Their rivalry ended in 1970 with the historic NFL–AFL merger, creating the conference structure we still see today:

  • AFC (American Football Conference)
  • NFC (National Football Conference)

The merger also cemented the Super Bowl as America’s biggest sporting event. First played in 1967, the game has become a global spectacle attracting hundreds of millions of viewers.

From expansion teams to legendary dynasties like the Steelers of the 1970s, 49ers of the 1980s, Cowboys of the 1990s, and the Patriots under Tom Brady, the league has continued to evolve into a cultural powerhouse.

Today, the NFL features 32 teams, advanced analytics, global fanbases and billion-dollar broadcasting deals - all part of its status as the most lucrative sports league on the planet.
