NFL 2026 Season Preview: Super Bowl Contenders, Risers and Regressors

Seattle are Super Bowl champions after a 29-13 win over New England. The Rams are the early Super Bowl LXI favourite. That is enough to frame the 2026 NFL season before a ball is kicked.

The NFC holds the champion and the market leader. The AFC still has Buffalo, Baltimore and Kansas City fighting for the same narrow path to February. The schedule is out, Week 1 is set and the league is about to move from offseason theories to real results.

The Defending Champions

Seattle did not scrape past New England in Super Bowl LX, they controlled the game and won 29-13 to claim the franchise's second Lombardi Trophy. That makes them the NFC's measuring stick until another team takes it from them.

The defence set the tone in the championship game and the Seahawks return to the spotlight immediately. They open the new season at home against the Patriots in a Super Bowl rematch on September 9, then host Kansas City in Week 7 and the Rams in Week 16.

That schedule does not allow a quiet title defence. Seattle will find out early whether the championship edge remains.

AFC

The teams built to win it

Buffalo, Baltimore and Kansas City are still the conference's headline teams. The Bills face the pressure that comes with another season built around a championship expectation. Their Week 12 meeting with Kansas City is one of the schedule's biggest games because neither side can afford to hand the other a tiebreaker in a loaded conference.

Baltimore remain in the same conversation. The Ravens open at Indianapolis and meet Cincinnati in Week 17, but the broader point is simple: their regular season will be judged through the lens of whether they can finally turn their top-end ability into a Super Bowl run.

Kansas City enter with a familiar advantage in experience and a familiar question in expectation. The Chiefs start against Denver on Monday night in Week 1. The standard has not changed. If they are healthy in January, nobody will want to see them.

Denver are the AFC team best placed to push from the outside into the main group. Opening at Kansas City tells them exactly where they stand immediately.

Teams on the rise

New England already showed it can make a deep run. The Patriots reached Super Bowl LX and now open the season in Seattle with a chance to measure their response against the team that beat them.

Houston also have a schedule that puts them in meaningful games. The Bills visit in Week 1 and the Texans meet the Rams later in the year. A team that wants to join the AFC's upper tier needs to take results from that calibre of opponent.

Regression candidates

The AFC's risk is not a single club falling away. It is the conference eating itself. Buffalo, Baltimore, Kansas City, Denver and New England all carry playoff expectations. The schedule leaves little room for a slow start.

Kansas City have the toughest balancing act. Their history makes them impossible to dismiss, but the conference is younger and deeper around them than it was during their earlier Super Bowl runs.

NFC

The Rams lead the early Super Bowl market and open the season against San Francisco in Melbourne. That Week 1 game is not just a novelty. It is the first statement game of the NFL year, and it puts the market favourite under the lights straight away.

Los Angeles also visit Seattle in Week 16, a game that could decide the NFC West and much more. The Rams are favourites because their roster is built for now. The challenge is translating that label into wins against the champion and the rest of a difficult conference.

Seattle are the other clear NFC heavyweight. The champions have earned that status and their home schedule gives them direct shots at the Patriots, Chiefs and Rams.

San Francisco, Philadelphia, Green Bay and Detroit form the wider group that can break into the top line. The NFC is not short on talent. It is short on teams that have already proved they can take the final step.

Teams on the rise

Chicago and Washington are the clubs to watch if the conference shifts quickly. A rise does not need to mean a Super Bowl in one season. It means making the playoff race real enough that an established NFC side has to worry about drawing them in January.

The 49ers also have an immediate chance to set their season's tone. A win over the Rams in Melbourne would not decide the year, but it would change the way the NFC West is viewed from the first week.

Regression candidates

The Rams are favourites and therefore carry the largest burden. The market is not asking them to make the playoffs. It is asking them to win the whole thing. That makes every difficult matchup a referendum on the roster.

Seattle face the traditional champion's problem. Opponents have spent all offseason studying the side that beat New England 29-13. The Seahawks cannot rely on surprise. They need to show that last February was repeatable.

What Will Define the NFL Season?

The season starts with the champion hosting the runner-up and the market favourite playing a division rival in Melbourne. That is a strong opening statement.

Seattle have the ring. The Rams have the price. Buffalo, Baltimore and Kansas City have another AFC fight on their hands. The 2026 season will be decided by which contender handles the expectation rather than just the talent.
