Lando Norris is the favorite for both pole position and race victory at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, thanks to McLaren's improved pace and technical gains, particularly in Baku's challenging second sector. While Kimi Antonelli maintains a strong championship lead and Mercedes remains competitive with their superior ERS, Norris is in top form and poised to break Antonelli's winning streak. Ferrari's weekend is complicated by expected engine penalties, giving Verstappen and Hamilton an opportunity to fight for strong finishes.

Lando Norris is tipped to take pole position and win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with McLaren's recent pace and improved energy deployment making him the biggest threat to championship leader Kimi Antonelli in Baku.

Antonelli arrives with an 81-point championship lead after consecutive victories at Monza and Madrid, but Baku presents a very different challenge. The 6.003km street circuit combines tight 90-degree corners and the narrow Castle section with one of Formula 1's longest flat-out runs, placing huge demands on traction, confidence and energy deployment.

Mercedes should remain extremely strong thanks to its benchmark ERS performance, but Norris arguably had the fastest car in Madrid before an unfortunately timed Virtual Safety Car swung the race towards Antonelli. McLaren's development curve continues upwards and Baku's technical middle sector should particularly favour the MCL40.

Ferrari faces a tougher weekend, particularly if Charles Leclerc takes the expected power-unit grid penalty, while Max Verstappen again shapes as a genuine podium threat.

  • Antonelli leads George Russell by 81 points in the Drivers' Championship.
  • Baku measures 6.003km with 51 race laps, with the Grand Prix unusually taking place on Saturday.
  • Last year's race featured just 25 on-track overtakes, despite Baku's enormous main straight.
  • Pirelli brings the C3 Hard, C4 Medium and C5 Soft, with another one-stop race the expected baseline.

Pole Position Prediction: Lando Norris

Lando Norris is the pick for pole position in Baku.

Mercedes should be extremely quick thanks to its superior energy deployment, but McLaren has dramatically improved its understanding of the Mercedes power unit and Norris continues to produce exceptional qualifying performances. The MCL40 should be particularly strong through Baku's technical second sector, while an efficient rear-wing package could minimise its straight-line weakness.

Leclerc would normally be a major pole contender after taking four consecutive Baku poles from 2021-24, but the possibility of an engine-related grid penalty changes the equation.

Race Winner Prediction: Lando Norris

Norris is also backed to convert pole into victory and end Antonelli's two-race winning streak.

Antonelli remains the biggest danger. Mercedes' ERS efficiency should be a major weapon down Baku's enormous straight, and his victories at Monza and Madrid underline how difficult he is to beat even when circumstances turn against him.

However, Norris appeared capable of beating Antonelli on outright pace in Madrid before the VSC changed the race, and McLaren should again excel through the technical sectors.

Verstappen completes the podium prediction after another strong result in Madrid, while Leclerc faces a recovery drive if Ferrari commits to the expected fresh power unit.
