Newmarket's July Festival rolls into its second day on Friday, with the Falmouth Stakes headlining another quality card on the July Course.

Our race-by-race preview for day two of the 2026 Newmarket July Festival is detailed below, while Live Racing & Sports Updates delivers the latest previews, analysis and coverage across all major sporting codes.

Newmarket July Festival 2026 - Day 2 Preview

Race 1 - Oddschecker Handicap Tips

I fancied 5. Princling in the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot, hoping the step up to 10 furlongs would bring about further improvement from William Haggas' handicapper.

Tom Marquand's mount was a step slow from the widest stall of all and raced keenly through the early stages, forcing his rider to settle near the rear. Turning for home, Princling sat fourth-last before being angled towards the centre of the track to launch his challenge. Haggas' three-year-old finished strongly, but had far too much ground to make up and crossed the line three lengths behind Lost Boys in fifth.

Princling remains on the same mark for this assignment, and the smaller field should help Marquand secure a better early position. Laureate Crown is a horse I like and Decade Of Time is interesting, but I'm finding it hard to look beyond the market leader.

Race 2 - Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes Tips

Libertango was impressive when landing the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, and George Boughey's filly will take plenty of beating. That said, I'm never keen to back juveniles at short prices, as they can often be unpredictable, so I'll take the favourite on with 3. Etonnante for Karl Burke.

Burke's filly made her racecourse debut at Ripon at the end of May and was sent off the 5/6 favourite. Clifford Lee's mount never looked in trouble, hitting the front with two furlongs to travel before kicking two lengths clear of her market rival on the uphill run to the line.

Burke said after that victory that Etonnante wouldn't be out of place at Royal Ascot, but the owners preferred to wait for the right opportunity. This daughter of Havana Grey looked like she would improve physically for that debut, and Burke is a master with precocious juvenile fillies.

Race 3 - Betway Trophy Tips

Wine Dark Sea looks far too short in the market, considering he's drawn in stall one and has never raced over this trip before. I'd much rather side with 4. Valedictory, who holds an entry in the Ebor later in the summer.

Progressive at three, Valedictory was sent off the 5/4 favourite for the race that Wine Dark Sea won at Ascot in May. The winner enjoyed an excellent prominent ride from Saffie Osborne, while Billy Loughnane's mount hit every traffic light trying to challenge from the rear and could only stay on into sixth late on.

Valedictory unseated Benoît de la Sayette on the way to the start at Goodwood last time out and looked green once the race got underway. De la Sayette was still able to smuggle the favourite into contention before asserting in the closing stages to score by a comfortable length and a half.

John and Thady Gosden's rising star wasn't entered for any of the handicaps at Royal Ascot, so this has presumably been the target all along. Valedictory relished the step up to 14 furlongs at Goodwood, and I'd be surprised if a mark of 92 proved to be his ceiling.

Race 4 - Falmouth Stakes Tips

With a 9lb weight-for-age allowance in her favour, I don't see how Blue Bolt beats Precise. Ryan Moore's mount is classy, tough and incredibly straightforward. Balantina has four lengths to find on the favourite from their clash at Royal Ascot and, while she's entitled to improve for that return, it'll be very difficult for her to bridge that gap.

At the prices, 4. Evolutionist appeals most from a betting perspective. Karl Burke's filly beat Lyrics Of Life and Legacy Link to win her maiden over this course and distance last season before running well when third to Precise in the Fillies' Mile.

Evolutionist made a winning three-year-old return in a Group 3 in France. Shane Foley's mount then ran a cracker in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, finishing a close second behind True Love after winning her group on the stands' side.

Burke's filly returns to Newmarket on the back of a complete forget run in the Prix de Diane, where she was slowly away, raced keenly and failed to see out the extended 10 furlongs. Dropping back to a mile looks a smart move and, like Precise, Evolutionist is well treated against the older fillies and mares at the weights.

Race 5 - Maiden Fillies' Stakes Tips

No bet for me in this race. Acting Lady is very short in the market, and only two of her rivals have raced previously.

Race 6 - Debenhams Handicap Tips

11. Rhythm N Hooves could be worth chancing here, as the July Course should suit his running style. Robert Cowell's six-year-old has only won twice on turf since his Royal Ascot victory in 2023, scoring at Doncaster the following season before landing a strong handicap at Newbury last August.

Billy Loughnane's mount was kept busy throughout the all-weather campaign and went close on his latest turf start at Windsor, going down by just a neck to Dream Composer. Despite that narrow defeat in a competitive handicap, Rhythm N Hooves remains on a mark of 81, which is 6lb lower than his last winning rating.

Race 7 - Jockey Club Estates Handicap Tips

Sierra Sands and Angel Gabriel met here at Newmarket over six furlongs last month, but neither has been tried over seven, and this is sure to test their stamina. 7. Toastmaster beat two of his rivals at Doncaster last time out, and Michael Herrington's handicapper was only raised 2lb for that success.

Toastmaster settled at the rear for much of that contest as Two Non Blondes and Flight Control battled for the lead. Herrington's three-year-old quickly bridged the gap entering the final two furlongs, but idled again once he pulled alongside the leaders and only managed to edge half a length clear on the run to the line.

I felt Toastmaster was comfortably the best horse in that contest, and a 2lb rise looks lenient. Oisin Murphy won't want to be left with too much to do, as it can be difficult to make up ground on this stiff track. Yet, Toastmaster is one of the strongest stayers in the field, and there's every chance he can follow up in Friday's card-closer.
