Sydney will fall just short in front of their home fans as Fremantle edge a tense Preliminary Final at the SCG and advance to just the second Grand Final in their history.
A place against either Hawthorn or Brisbane awaits the winner, with Sydney looking to reach another Grand Final and Fremantle attempting to return to the decider for the first time since 2013. The Swans will start favourites on their home deck, but this shapes as a much tighter contest than the market might suggest.
Sydney remain strong at both ends of the ground. Their defence is well organised and capable of forcing Fremantle into difficult entries, while Charlie Curnow, Logan McDonald and Tom Papley give them three completely different threats inside 50. Fremantle Dockers Form Analysis
Fremantle bounced back strongly from their disappointing Qualifying Final loss to Hawthorn, defeating Geelong by 14 points in a high-scoring Semi Final at Optus Stadium. The Dockers made a much better start, kicking six goals in the opening term and leading by 31 points before Geelong surged to an eight-point advantage during the third quarter.
Fremantle responded when challenged, with Luke Jackson taking over late in the term before the Dockers held on for a 120-106 victory. Jackson finished with 25 disposals, 35 hitouts and two goals, while Patrick Voss kicked four and Shai Bolton had 26 disposals. Fremantle also dominated the clearances 44-31, including 23-13 from the centre.
Jackson has been one of Fremantle's best across the finals, recording 22 and 25 disposals while kicking one and two goals in their two matches. Jordan Clark has also provided plenty of drive with 38 and 25 disposals, while Jye Amiss heads to Sydney in excellent scoring form with 13 goals across his past four matches. Josh Treacy also responded after being held without a mark against Hawthorn, finishing with a team-high eight marks against Geelong and providing an important target further up the ground.
The Dockers now need to take that form on the road, but travelling has not been a major problem this season. Fremantle have compiled a 7-4 record outside Western Australia and have already shown they can win at the SCG, while their only meeting with Sydney this season resulted in a 38-point victory in Round 18. The biggest lesson from the Hawthorn defeat was their need to be braver with the ball under pressure, and that was evident against Geelong as they used a much more proactive handball game and looked to generate play from stoppage. They will need the same approach against a Sydney side capable of applying enormous pressure on its home ground.
