Sydney Swans vs Fremantle Dockers AFL 2026 Preliminary Final FAQ’s

A place against either Hawthorn or Brisbane awaits the winner, with Sydney looking to reach another Grand Final and Fremantle attempting to return to the decider for the first time since 2013. The Swans will start favourites on their home deck, but this shapes as a much tighter contest than the market might suggest.

Sydney remain strong at both ends of the ground. Their defence is well organised and capable of forcing Fremantle into difficult entries, while Charlie Curnow, Logan McDonald and Tom Papley give them three completely different threats inside 50. Even without several first-choice midfielders, the replacements have stepped up and allowed Sydney to maintain pressure around the contest rather than simply relying on their stars.

Fremantle's challenge is to stop Sydney owning territory. That starts with Luke Jackson against Brodie Grundy and extends to Caleb Serong, Andrew Brayshaw and Hayden Young being able to either win first possession or pressure Sydney's second touch. If the Dockers allow the Swans to continually lock the ball in their front half, Sydney have too much firepower to survive for four quarters.

The key for Fremantle will be to make the game more open once they win possession. Their best chance is to use handball and overlap to get through Sydney's first layer of pressure, then move the ball quickly enough to isolate Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss before the Swans can reset behind the ball. Treacy's strength in the air, Amiss' finishing and the speed of Shai Bolton and Michael Frederick give Fremantle enough variety to challenge Sydney's defence if the entries are clean.

At the other end, Fremantle cannot afford to become too focused on Curnow. Sydney can hurt them through McDonald in the air and Papley at ground level, so their defenders will need to defend collectively rather than allowing one matchup to dictate their structure. If Fremantle can break even in the ruck and clearance battle, prevent Sydney from generating waves of repeat entries and turn the game into more of an end-to-end contest, they have the weapons to pull off the upset.

Expect Sydney to have periods where they look in control, particularly early, but Fremantle's midfield depth and greater ability to change the shape of the game can keep them within striking distance. In a close finish, the Dockers can find enough through Treacy, Amiss and their small forwards to grind out a narrow win.

Take the Dockers in the 1-39 point range with Serong a key inside midfielder. Curnow and Treacy are on for goals at either end of the ground.

Seven of the past eight matches between the two sides have been decided by less than 39 points.
The Dockers have won two of the past three against the Swans at the SCG.
Josh Treacy has kicked 12 goals from his past four against the Swans, while Charlie Curnow has kicked 15 goals in his past four against the Dockers.
Caleb Serong had 28 disposals in the most recent head to head.

Head to Head Stats

Fremantle were 38-point winners in the only meeting between the sides this season, producing a remarkable second-half turnaround at Optus Stadium in Round 18. The Dockers were 0.11 at half-time and trailed by 22 points before kicking 15.10 to Sydney's 6.4 after the break, including nine goals in the final quarter.

Charlie Curnow kicked five goals for Sydney, while Josh Treacy booted four for Fremantle. Errol Gulden led the Swans with 30 disposals, while Caleb Serong and Murphy Reid had 28 each for the Dockers.

Sydney had won the previous two meetings, although Fremantle have won two of their past three against the Swans at the SCG. Three of the past four clashes between the sides have been decided by 12 points or fewer.

Standout player performances in the recent head to heads have come from;

Errol Gulden (Swans)- has had 25+ disposals in three of his past four matches against the Dockers.
Caleb Serong (Freo)- had 28 disposals in the most recent meeting
Josh Treacy (Freo)- has kicked 12 goals in his past four matches against the Swans
Charlie Curnow (Swans)- 15 goals from his past four matches against Freo.

Sydney Swans Form Analysis

Sydney are surging into the Preliminary Final after producing a stunning 53-point Qualifying Final victory over Brisbane at the SCG. The Swans won the inside-50 count 69-52 and clearances 45-35, with their reshaped midfield taking control around the contest before their forwards capitalised. Errol Gulden was brilliant with 34 disposals, eight clearances and 915 metres gained, while Logan McDonald kicked six goals and Charlie Curnow and Tom Papley added five each as Sydney piled on 21.15 (141).

The Swans have produced some enormous numbers at the SCG this season and will have home-ground advantage again in the Preliminary Final. Sydney have won 11 of their 12 matches at the SCG in 2026, with their past three victories at the venue all coming by more than 50 points, including the Qualifying Final against Brisbane. They are averaging 118 points per game at the SCG this season and their ability to generate repeat opportunities has been evident recently, recording 69 inside 50s against Brisbane after having 70 in their 53-point Round 24 victory over North Melbourne.

Sydney's forward line is also hitting peak form at the right time. McDonald, Curnow and Papley combined for 16 goals against Brisbane, with McDonald's six coming against a defence led by Harris Andrews. Gulden has become increasingly influential through the midfield, while James Rowbottom has added another strong contested presence to the group. The Swans have now produced consecutive 53-point victories and their recent SCG form suggests opposition sides will need to withstand both a huge volume of entries and one of the competition's most potent forward lines.

Fremantle Dockers Form Analysis

Fremantle bounced back strongly from their disappointing Qualifying Final loss to Hawthorn, defeating Geelong by 14 points in a high-scoring Semi Final at Optus Stadium. The Dockers made a much better start, kicking six goals in the opening term and leading by 31 points before Geelong surged to an eight-point advantage during the third quarter.

Fremantle responded when challenged, with Luke Jackson taking over late in the term before the Dockers held on for a 120-106 victory. Jackson finished with 25 disposals, 35 hitouts and two goals, while Patrick Voss kicked four and Shai Bolton had 26 disposals. Fremantle also dominated the clearances 44-31, including 23-13 from the centre.

Jackson has been one of Fremantle's best across the finals, recording 22 and 25 disposals while kicking one and two goals in their two matches. Jordan Clark has also provided plenty of drive with 38 and 25 disposals, while Jye Amiss heads to Sydney in excellent scoring form with 13 goals across his past four matches. Josh Treacy also responded after being held without a mark against Hawthorn, finishing with a team-high eight marks against Geelong and providing an important target further up the ground.

The Dockers now need to take that form on the road, but travelling has not been a major problem this season. Fremantle have compiled a 7-4 record outside Western Australia and have already shown they can win at the SCG, while their only meeting with Sydney this season resulted in a 38-point victory in Round 18. The biggest lesson from the Hawthorn defeat was their need to be braver with the ball under pressure, and that was evident against Geelong as they used a much more proactive handball game and looked to generate play from stoppage. They will need the same approach against a Sydney side capable of applying enormous pressure on its home ground.

Sydney Swans Team News

Sydney will be without captain Callum Mills after he suffered a serious right knee injury during the opening quarter against Brisbane and was unable to return. The Swans had already entered the Qualifying Final without Isaac Heeney, Nick Blakey, Chad Warner, Riley Bice and James Jordon due to their season-ending club suspensions, making the victory particularly impressive. There should be some reinforcements for the Preliminary Final, however, with Tom McCartin and Joel Amartey expected to be available after using the extra week to build their fitness and press for selection.

Fremantle Dockers Team News

Fremantle came through the win over Geelong without any listed injuries, leaving selection as the main issue ahead of the Preliminary Final. Brennan Cox is pushing for a return after missing the Semi Final, having ticked the required boxes in his recovery, although his lack of recent football remains a consideration. The Dockers were pleased with the performance of the side against Geelong, making changes difficult, while Brandon Walker remains sidelined after suffering an ankle injury against Hawthorn in the Qualifying Final.
