One of the foundation clubs in the VFL is St Kilda, who infamously hold the record at 27 for winning the most Wooden Spoons (last placed finish) in the history of the competition.

Now at the refurbished Moorabin Oval, St Kilda are in a re-build stage where they do look to seek finals glory in season 2023.

St Kilda History

The St Kilda Football Club Football Club took part in the inaugural VFL season in 1897 which saw them lose to Collingwood by 25 points in their first ever game

Based at the Junction Oval in them early days (now the home to Cricket Victoria), St Kilda made their first finals series in 1907 and in 1913, participated in their first grand final when losing to South Melbourne.

Despite a lack of team success, Colin Watson became the first St Kilda player to win a Brownlow Medal in 1925 and whilst the Saints were competitive following this, they weren't able to achieve the ultimate success.

Following a move to Moorabin in 1965, St Kilda's biggest highlight in the club's history occured only a season later in 1966 where after a famous Barry Breen kick late in the game to break the deadlock, St Kilda won their first and only premiership to date.

St Kilda's main chances since then to secure another flag came in 1997 when losing to the Adelaide Crows in the title race and in 2009 and 2010, finding both Geelong and then Collingwood (in a replay) the better at the grand final stage.
