The Brisbane Lions are a result of a late 1996 merger between the Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears Football Clubs.

With arguably the greatest AFL side of all time in the early 2000's with three premierships from an extremely talented list, they made somewhat of a resurgence with a finals appearance in 2019 following many lean years.

Brisbane Lions History

The end of 1996 saw two struggling clubs via the Fitzroy Lions (based in Victoria) and the Brisbane Bears merge and create the Brisbane Lions Football Club.

Coached by the 'best player of the 20th century' in former Hawthorn champion player and Collingwood coach Leigh Matthews who took over the reins in 1999, this sole Queensland based club at the time became one of the best sides in AFL history with three premierships from 2001 to 2003 before a grand final loss in 2004.

In a Brisbane Lions list that was littered with champions who included Michael Voss, Simon Black, Jason Akermanis, Jonathan Brown and Luke Power just to name a few, their great success was mostly followed by many low finishes in the last decade before two two finals apperances in 2019 under Chris Fagan.
