The 2026 AFL season comes down to one final game, with Fremantle and the Brisbane Lions set to battle for the premiership at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

Both clubs have backed in the combinations that took them through their preliminary finals, with neither Fremantle nor Brisbane making a change for the decider.

There was heartbreak at the selection table for Brennan Cox and Noah Answerth despite both pushing their cases for a Grand Final recall. Cox has been named among Fremantle's emergencies, while Answerth is an emergency for Brisbane after appearing to overcome his ankle injury.

The minor premiers have backed in an unchanged side for the Grand Final, with Oscar McDonald retaining his place in Justin Longmuir's backline and Brennan Cox missing out on a recall.

Cox has been named as an emergency alongside Chris Scerri and Jaeger O’Meara. The defender had pushed hard to prove his fitness after overcoming the calf injury he suffered against Carlton on August 22, even sitting out Peel Thunder's WAFL Grand Final victory to focus on his recovery.

Cox came through Fremantle's main training session on Wednesday, but the Dockers have opted for continuity and match fitness. It means he will miss his fifth consecutive senior game.

Judd McVee has also retained his place despite pressure from Brandon Walker, who came into the team for Fremantle's qualifying final loss to Hawthorn.

Brisbane Lions Grand Final Team News

The Lions have also gone unchanged for the Grand Final, with Lachie Neale retaining his place following his successful plea at the AFL Appeals Board.

Noah Answerth has missed out on a recall despite training strongly on Thursday and appearing to have overcome the ankle injury that kept him out of Brisbane's semi and preliminary finals.

Answerth has instead been named among the emergencies alongside Cody Curtin and Bruce Reville.
