The NRL Finals move into Week 2 with two sudden-death semi-finals as the Sydney Roosters host Cronulla before the New Zealand Warriors get another chance at home against Newcastle.

The Roosters have already beaten Cronulla twice this season and have now won eight of the last 12 meetings between the teams.

Their defence also stood up extremely well against Penrith last week, keeping the Panthers to 19 points despite another difficult night with the ball. Cronulla got past North Queensland 26-16, but the Cowboys made 15 errors and still had opportunities to keep the game close.

The Sharks have conceded 24.6 points per game this season, and the Roosters should create enough chances to punish them. Expect another tight finals contest, but Sydney have the edge and can make it three wins over Cronulla this year.

Newcastle deserve plenty of respect after completely upsetting the script against South Sydney, with Kalyn Ponga outstanding as the Knights produced a 20-10 elimination-final win despite their injury problems. The Warriors present a much tougher assignment in Auckland.

New Zealand have won the last four meetings with Newcastle, including both clashes in 2026 by 14 points or more, and the Knights haven't beaten them in New Zealand since 2019.

The Warriors will also be desperate to respond after surrendering a 16-8 lead against the Dolphins last week. Newcastle's confidence should keep this competitive, but the Warriors at home are the pick to grind out a 1-12 victory.
