The Parramatta Eels have been one of the battling clubs of the competition following a golden era in 1980's, a decade where all four of their premierships came in.
Based in the large western Sydney suburb of Parramatta, the Eels benefit from having one of the largest member and supporter bases in the NRL.
Parramatta Eels History
Founded in 1946 were Parramatta Rugby Club who were unsuccessful in early years where between the 1952 and 1961, they finished at the bottom of the table eight times and prevailed in only 35 of 180 matches played in that period.
Adopting the Eels nickname in the late 1970's, Parramatta reached their first grand final in 1976 but had to settle for runner-up and followed that up with another loss in the title deciding match in 1977 when losing via a grand final replay to St. George.
It was the early and mid 1980's that became a powerful era for the Parramatta Eels with five grand finals from 1981 to 1986 and four premierships (1981, 1982, 1983 and 1986) where off the back of champion players in Ray Price, Brett Kenny, Peter Stirling, Steve Ella and Mick Cronin, helped form the best side in the competition.
The Parramatta Eels defied low pre-season expectations in 2019 with a fifth placed finish and a whopping 58-0 victory over the Brisbane Broncos in their first final before being eliminated by the Melbourne Storm the following week.
