Belmont Best Bet - Race 4 No. 2 Royal Toronado

The Grant and Alana Williams stable is beginning to hit its straps in September, and Royal Toronado looks well placed to continue that momentum in Saturday's Listed feature.

He resumed as favourite in the Farnley Stakes on September 5 despite having never won first-up, yet still produced a strong return when runner-up behind Too Dardy after recording the fastest closing sectionals of the race.

Royal Toronado now meets that rival fitter and with a 2kg weight swing, while his record suggests there can be sharp improvement once he has a run under his belt.

That was evident earlier this year when he improved significantly second-up over 1800m at Ascot to win in 72+ company carrying the same 57kg he has here.

The rise from 1400m to the mile looks a suitable progression, and any natural improvement from his first-up performance should make him very hard to beat.

Glenroy Chaff Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Belmont Value Bet - Race 5 No. 9 Galway Shawl

A record of four wins and a second from just seven starts underlines the ability Galway Shawl has already shown in a lightly raced career.

There were excuses when she was beaten in 60+ company late last preparation after previously finishing runner-up behind Rissoles, who went on to win at Listed level.

The Bruce Watkins-trained mare possesses a strong turn-of-foot over 1000m, and both of her fresh appearances over this distance have resulted in victories.

Her latest fresh win came at Bunbury first-up in January when she produced the fastest closing sectionals of the meeting, while her September 7 trial suggested she has returned in good order without being fully extended.

She should be able to settle just off the speed from barrier three with Troy Turner aboard, and while any rain would introduce some query, she's still among the leading contenders in the opening quaddie leg.

Lawn Pride Australia Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Belmont Roughie - Race 6 No. 7 Centre Bond

Truly Loyal deserves his position near the top of the market after winning both starts this preparation, and the rise to 1400m third-up looks another suitable progression for the lightly raced gelding.

For those looking for something at a much bigger price, Centre Bond makes some each-way appeal after having excuses in both runs this campaign.

He looked in need of the run when resuming at Pinjarra on August 12 following only an even trial, yet still produced a passable effort over 1200m.

The six-year-old was then well supported at Belmont on September 2 but was given little chance after being dragged back and finding trouble, making that run easier to forgive than the finishing position suggests.

He won third-up at Belmont last preparation before producing two competitive Saturday efforts, and with a significant drop in the weights under Chanel Cooper, the quirky but talented gelding is worth respecting at the price.

Belmont Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 12 Pistone

The overall depth of this metropolitan contest looks questionable, with several exposed runners making up the field and most of the upside sitting with the shorter-priced chances.

Pistone steps straight from provincial maiden grade but deserves his place near the top of the market after showing plenty of professionalism in his Bunbury debut win.

He was not simply gifted the lead there, instead showing good race sense to sit outside the leader before quickening when asked and putting the race away in comfortable fashion.

Marcos and several of the other lightly raced runners provide a stronger test here, but Pistone may hold an important tactical advantage with Holly Watson likely to look for a forward position aboard the son of Universal Ruler.

It has also been a strong start to the season for the Mitchell Pateman stable, and with Pistone looking capable of progressing quickly through the grades, this appears a suitable next step.
