The Underwood Stakes is one of the key weight-for-age contests of the early Melbourne spring, while the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes adds another Group 1 feature to a card packed with quality racing and important carnival lead-ups.

Caulfield Tips September 19

Race 1 - 12:10PM The Taggart Tips (1800m)

Given time after a debut third in June last year, 12. Sapphire Siren returned a stronger horse last campaign. She won fresh at Pakenham before finishing third in the $250,000 Future Stars Series Final.

She then handled an unconventional jump from 1400m to 2100m when winning third-up with a month between runs before a spell. The daughter of Highland Reel opened this campaign with another strong victory at Sandown Lakeside on August 19.

There's more depth here, but she has upside, tactical speed and has proven effective across varying conditions. No real knocks on the favourite in a competitive race.

9. Haaracaine could surprise fresh. His three jump-outs leading into this return have been good and, while winless last preparation, he was competitive through much of autumn and early winter. He looked a promising middle-distance type earlier in his career and Mark Zahra takes the reins.

The weight rise is the knock on 2. Politely Dun, who carries an extra 4.5kg after winning over this track-and-trip second-up. 4. My Brothers Keeper is a bolter to consider after producing the fastest final 600m, 400m and 200m in a leader-dominated race first-up, and the rise in trip should suit.

Selections: 12-9-2-4.

Race 2 - 12:40PM HKJC World Pool Classics Preview Tips (1800m)

You could just about raffle a few of these, with the Busuttin and Young stable having two three-year-olds prominent in the market.

The lesser fancied of that pair is 3. Icy You, a son of Pinatubo who made good ground for second on debut before improving sharply at Echuca on August 30. He sustained a long run under Craig Newitt and bolted in over the mile.

Newitt suits these momentum types and has a low draw to work with. The extra furlong looks another positive, with the only query whether that latest effort took anything out of him.

Don't be surprised if 2. Frank Whisper ultimately proves the better Victoria Derby prospect. The son of Frankel needed every bit of 1700m when breaking through at start three and has since completed two September jump-outs, working strongly through the line in the latest.

1. Arashi Flash is the early favourite after winning over 1547m at Geelong and should appreciate getting to 1800m. 8. Winter Arc faces a class rise but improved with blinkers on last start and gives every indication he'll stay.

Selections: 3-2-1-8.

Race 3 - 1:15PM Peninsula Kubota Handicap Tips (1100m)

I keep coming back to 2. Winnasedge, who has built an excellent record at Caulfield, particularly over the shorter dashes.

He's never finished outside the top two from six starts here, with four wins and two seconds, while he's a perfect three from three over the Caulfield 1100m.

He then ran second to Cosmic Crusader in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes. That form has held up strongly, with Cosmic Crusader subsequently winning the P.B. Lawrence Stakes before placing in the Memsie.

The 1200m proved a tougher task last time, but Winnasedge is better suited back to 1100m after a freshen-up and has since won a Flemington jump-out.

11. Behaviour is flying and should get a strong tempo to suit, although firmer ground is the slight query. 1. Spywire is dangerous fresh and has won his past two attempts at 1100m, while 3. Bev's Nine brings a strong record south and gets Blake Shinn.

Selections: 2-11-1-3.

Race 4 - 1:50PM Manhari Thousand Guineas Prelude Tips (1400m)

Getting to 1400m for the first time looks a positive for 9. Icelady, with the Ciaron Maher-trained filly bred to appreciate the rise in distance.

Her pedigree contains plenty of stamina. She's from the same family as dual Group 1 winner Kenedna, a high-class 2000m performer, while recent Wyong Gold Cup winner Matusalem also comes from the family. Further back is Yammer, a four-time stakes winner who was successful out to 2400m.

Icelady resumed with a second at Geelong, where she was the pick of the on-speed runners behind Over Excited. That form has already held up, with Over Excited subsequently finishing runner-up to Satono Glow at Group 3 level.

She also showed promise through her first campaign, including a Group 3 placing during the Adelaide carnival, and should take another step with the extra furlong.

5. Profligate returned with a good fourth in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes, recording the second-fastest closing sectionals, and looks another who will improve as the distances rise. She may even be looking for further than 1400m in time.

8. Tolaga Bay is nice moving filly who returned with a Sandown Hillside win in a handy BM64 and remains open to improvement. 11. Burning Heartz won on debut, wasn't disgraced at Group 3 level in Adelaide and comes off a better jump-out than the result suggests.

Selections: 9-5-8-11.

Race 5 - 2:25PM Sportsbet Caulfield Guineas Prelude Tips (1400m)

The forgotten horse after one poor run could be 8. Vallice, who disappointed as favourite at Sandown on August 22 when he never settled or found any rhythm.

The Ciaron Maher-trained colt has since moved well in a Cranbourne jump-out, while his previous three performances suggested above-average ability. He won a Sandown Lakeside two-year-old handicap in June before an encouraging Caulfield Heath return over 1200m.

A colder ride may suit, allowing him to find his feet before producing his finish.

5. Wolf Gap made a stylish winning debut before placing at Group 3 level behind Paradoxium, then finished off strongly when resuming in the McKenzie Stakes. There appeared to be little intent early there and the extra 100m should suit.

3. Blind Raise is probably the one to beat after winning the McKenzie over Wolf Gap and is already proven at 1400m. 2. American Eagle remains unbeaten after getting every favour in the McNeil Stakes, but faces a different test rising to 1400m from a wide gate.

Selections: 8-5-3-2.

Race 6 - 3:00PM Sportsbet How Now Stakes Tips (1200m)

At the price, 8. Miss Freelove looks the each-way play in the How Now Stakes, with Peter Snowden sending the mare south fresh.

She has a solid grounding through two Sydney trials and moved nicely in both. Her exposed form also reads well, with her only finish outside the top four last campaign coming when unlucky first-up.

Miss Freelove was then freshened before winning at Listed level during the Scone carnival, while that preparation ended with a stakes placing at Eagle Farm. There is enough depth to that form to suggest she can measure up here fresh.

3. Point Barrow is the most brilliant mare in the race. Her Moir Stakes return was a pass mark and she worked home well despite never looking completely comfortable. She won comfortably over this track-and-trip second-up last campaign before an eye-catching Robert Sangster effort. A firmer track is a big tick.

10. Bridal Waltz maps well and is suited back against her own sex after an honest fresh return behind Oliveanotherday. 4. Custom is fit, in form and comes off a comfortable Group 3 track-and-trip victory, so she's hard to leave out.

Selections: 8-3-10-4.

Race 7 - 3:35PM Henley Homes Underwood Stakes Tips (1800m)

There was plenty of discussion around William Pike's ride on 5. Cosmic Crusader in the Memsie Stakes, but the gelding still lost no admires in defeat.

Taken back to last and inconvenienced around the 600m, he had plenty of ground to make up but closed strongly for third behind Beiwacht after winning the Bletchingly and P.B. Lawrence at his first two Melbourne starts.

Staying at 1400m for the third run of his preparation may also have worked against him. The rise to 1800m fourth-up looks a much better fit, given he followed a similar pattern when winning the Group 1 Northerly Stakes last December.

Barrier three gives Pike the chance to settle closer, with Lindermann drawn inside as the obvious frontrunner. With the right grounding, a more suitable trip and a better draw than he had in the Memsie, Cosmic Crusader gets his chance.

4. Pinstriped has put together three encouraging runs this campaign and arrives with a stronger fitness base than many of his rivals. He was the pick of the closers in the P.B. Lawrence before working through the line well behind Evaporate at Sandown, and the rise to 1800m is worth exploring.

1. Lindermann looks the main on-speed influence after a strong all-the-way Randwick mile win and should control plenty of the race shape, although his previous Melbourne form leaves a big query. 2. Buckaroo also worked through the line well in the Memsie and should appreciate getting to 1800m.

Selections: 5-4-1-2.

Race 8 - 4:15PM Tobin Brothers Naturalism Stakes Tips (2000m)

We get to see 14. Zahrann under the most suitable Australian conditions he's encountered since joining the Ciaron Maher stable.

A mile was clearly short of his best on Australian debut at Flemington, yet he still worked through the line strongly carrying 60kg. He improved at 2000m second-up, although the Heavy track may have found him out late.

Freshened, he resumed over 1700m at Caulfield on Memsie Stakes Day and found himself in an impossible position. He was the eye-catcher from the rear, recording the fastest final 800m, 600m and 400m.

He should strip fitter, the rise to 2000m is ideal and his overseas form suggests firmer ground is what he wants.

5. Wootton Verni could improve sharply third-up after covering ground with 60.5kg in a fast-run Heatherlie Stakes. He draws kinder, drops 2.5kg and is already a Group 2 winner over 2000m, so this looks much more suitable. His return was sound.

11. Deakin made ground nicely when resuming and gets to 2000m second-up, the same stage of a preparation at which he produced his first Australian win. 16. Machine Gun Gracie now has two runs under her belt, drops 2.5kg and should roll forward as one of the main on-speed influences.

Selections: 14-5-11-16.

Race 9 - 4:50PM Sportsbet Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Tips (1400m)

13. Regal Award has never been straightforward, which makes the booking of Lachlan Neindorf particularly important given how well he appears to understand the gelding.

Neindorf was aboard when Regal Award broke through in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic at Eagle Farm, where he was allowed to stride more freely and comfortably accounted for Skyhook.

That form has strengthened, with Skyhook winning both subsequent starts before returning this spring to take out the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes. Neindorf was also aboard for Regal Award's Caulfield mile victory last spring, while two recent 1000m jump-out wins suggest he's ready fresh.

Still lightly raced and carrying just 52.5kg, Regal Award gets conditions that should allow him to produce his best.

15. Persian Spirit looked ready for 1400m when fourth in the Chautauqua Stakes after struggling for momentum before picking up again late. Three of his six career wins have come over this distance, while Symon Wilde has had this race mapped out as the third-up target.

17. Harry's Yacht is the roughie if he gains a start. The 1100m was too sharp first-up, he's since won a Flemington trial and his two most recent victories came over this track-and-trip. 6. Lady Shenandoah comes back sharply in grade from the Winx Stakes and gets her chance in more usitable assignment.

Selections: 13-15-17-6.

Race 10 - 5:25PM Handicap Tips (1400m)

Not sure what to make of 17. Cruiserweight, who has already had an interrupted spring for the Hayes stable.

He looked capable of progressing quickly after opening his account with a hat-trick, including a big track-and-trip win here on July 11, before disappointing a fortnight later. He then had setbacks, including being scratched at the barriers at Sandown and missing a start on Memsie Stakes Day.

His September 5 return at Sandown resulted in a narrow defeat when he couldn't reel in Ivan's Hero, who would be outclassed here. The talent is there, but at the price I'm happy to look elsewhere.

At long odds, 12. Supernima finally gets more suitable conditions. He hasn't had chances on his preferred going this preparation, while the Heavy 8 and mile were against him last time. Back to 1400m on firmer ground looks ideal, and the last time he saw a Good track in Melbourne over this trip he beat Ndola, who won two of his next three, including a Listed race.

If 19. Savoyard gains a start as third emergency, he gets promoted to the top selection after an excellent Caulfield return when doing his best work late. 13. Fundamental Nature won fresh and arguably should have made it two straight last time in the same BM74 that Cruiserweight comes through.

9. Fiorenot resumes and 1400m may prove short of his best, but he's a genuine type and a recent jump-out win suggests he's forward enough to run well fresh.

Selections: 12-19-13-9.
