Morphettville Best Bet - Race 3 No. 6 Light The Night

There has been plenty to like about the consistency of Light The Night since his debut, with three wins and five placings from his subsequent 11 starts.

Two of those victories have come on the Parks circuit, and his record over this 1250m course reads particularly well after winning both previous attempts here during the summer.

He returned with an impressive win on a Soft 7 at Morphettville on August 8, finding the better ground and putting a good margin on a field that has since produced three subsequent winners, including Bootlegger at Listed level.

A month between runs and the drop back to 1000m were against him second-up on September 5, yet he still charged home while recording the fastest last 800m, 600m and 400m of the entire meeting.

The extra 250m looks ideal third-up, and while The Cosmic One is clearly the danger, that runner rises in the weights and is deep into the campaign, leaving Light The Night as the one who may still have a little more upside for now.

Morphettville Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Guru Warrior

Fourth-up and back onto firmer ground looks an ideal opportunity for Guru Warrior to atone after conditions went against him here last start.

He was well supported when stepping sharply to 1950m on September 5 after two runs over 1400m to begin the preparation, but simply failed to get through the Soft 6 while carrying a big weight.

His first-up effort over a trip well short of his best had been encouraging, while there were excuses in the Listed assignment that followed before he stepped up in distance last time.

The Andrew Gluyas-trained five-year-old began his winning sequence fourth-up last preparation when bolting in over this track and trip, with another three victories following from there.

Those wins all came on good ground, and he also took until his fourth run to break through during his first campaign, suggesting he may simply be a horse who improves with racing and now gets the conditions to suit.

Croser Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Morphettville Favourite - Race 8 No. 9 Chica Astuta

Chica Astuta made an immediate impression when winning on debut over 1000m on the Parks circuit in February before being put away after that single run.

She was heavily backed when resuming on August 8 and started around the $2 mark, but produced a disappointing performance behind Pretty Baby, who has since franked that form with another three victories.

There was more encouragement second-up behind the same horse on August 22, with the rise in distance suiting and her work through and beyond the line suggesting she was heading the right way.

It can be difficult to know exactly where the ceiling sits with such a lightly raced filly, but this is not an especially deep race against her own sex and the move to 1400m on firmer ground gives her every chance to take another step forward.

Noel Callow retains the ride, and after combining successfully with the Stokes stable in recent weeks, this looks a suitable race for Chica Astuta to return to the winner's stall.

Thomas Farms Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Morphettville Value Bet - Race 9 No. 7 Shady Thinker

The evidence is starting to suggest Shady Thinker simply does not produce his best on rain-affected ground, with all three of his career wins coming on good surfaces.

His first major disappointment came during a short New South Wales campaign last season, having been unlucky on a Good 4 at Rosehill before failing to handle softer conditions at his following start and being sent for a break.

Both Adelaide runs this preparation have again come on wet ground, with a heavy defeat at Group 3 level first-up followed by a slightly more encouraging effort when dropping from 1200m to 1000m last time.

That drop in distance was never likely to suit, and a similar pattern occurred during his first preparation when he was beaten after back-to-back wins when coming back in trip.

With two runs now under his belt, firmer ground and a slightly easier assignment overall, a sharp form reversal would not surprise from a gelding who has already shown he possesses good ability.
