Belmont Roughie Tip

Belmont Roughie - Race 6 No. 7 Centre Bond

There have been excuses in both runs this campaign for Centre Bond, who looks capable of producing a much better showing third-up at Belmont.

The six-year-old appeared to need his Pinjarra return on August 12 after only an even trial, while he was then well supported here on September 2 but was dragged back and found trouble, making the finishing position easier to forgive.

He followed a similar pattern last preparation, improving sharply to win third-up at Belmont before producing two competitive performances in stronger Saturday company.

Truly Loyal clearly sets the standard after consecutive wins, but Centre Bond drops significantly in the weights with Chanel Cooper aboard and the quirky gelding looks worth including at the bigger price.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 6 No. 8 Miss Freelove

Fresh form and a strong recent trial base give Miss Freelove some appeal at an each-way quote in the How Now Stakes.

Peter Snowden sends the mare south after two Sydney trials, and she moved well in both while building towards her return.

Her form last campaign stands up nicely, with her only finish outside the top four coming when unlucky first-up before she later won at Listed level during the Scone carnival and finished the preparation with a stakes placing at Eagle Farm.

That level of form gives her enough substance to measure up fresh, and at the price she shapes as one of the more interesting runners in an open feature.

Gold Coast Roughie Tip

Gold Coast Roughie - Race 9 No. 2 Pocketmoney

Returning to 1400m looks a major positive for Pocketmoney, who should strip fitter after resuming over a trip short of her best at Eagle Farm.

The Chris and Corey Munce-trained mare travelled well enough around the speed over 1200m on September 5 before fitness appeared to tell late, and she had already shown her liking for the Gold Coast by winning over this track-and-trip during the winter.

That victory was followed by a narrow second in stronger Saturday BM85 company at the Sunshine Coast, while her subsequent Doomben run came in a deeper Class 6 before she was given time.

Her past three starts at 1400m have produced two wins and that close Sunshine Coast second, and from barrier one Benjamin Osmond should be able to give her every chance in a race against her own sex.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 9 No. 7 Shady Thinker

The return to firmer ground could be exactly what Shady Thinker needs to turn his form around at Morphettville Parks.

All three of his career wins have come on Good tracks, while his main disappointments have tended to arrive when conditions have been rain-affected, including both runs this preparation.

He resumed in Group 3 company before showing a little more when dropping sharply from 1200m to 1000m last time, a distance change that was unlikely to suit given a similar pattern earlier in his career.

With two runs now under his belt, a more suitable surface and a slightly easier assignment, Shady Thinker has enough ability to be considered at the bigger price.

Randwick Roughie Tip

Randwick Roughie - Race 4 No. 15 Alabama State

A much kinder draw and the rise to 1400m give Alabama State the chance to improve sharply if the first emergency gains a start at Randwick.

He has been forced to work from wide barriers in all three runs this campaign, beginning with a strong return over 1200m here on August 8 when ridden cold from barrier nine before finishing off well.

Another brave effort followed from barrier 13 second-up, while he appeared to be looking for further when a touch one-paced late over the same trip at his latest appearance.

Barrier three changes the setup completely, and with a stronger fitness base underneath him, Alabama State makes each-way appeal at a big quote if connections elect to run.
