If there's one thing that Australians do better than most it's produce top quality sprinters.

We produced arguably the greatest of all-time in Black Caviar, but year after year we prove that the mighty mare wasn't just a flash in the pan. Sprinting races are a favourite of Australian punters so we've compiled our list of the top-five sprinters currently in training down under.

The best five sprinters in Australia

1. Nature Strip - Prior to the 2020 spring, this enigmatic gelding was the best sprinter in the world but just didn't quite come up that campaign, however, he took back the mantle following feature autumn wins in the Lightning Stakes before defending his TJ Smith Stakes crown at 'The Championships'. His dominant 2021 spring confirmed his status as Australia's best sprinter.

2. Eduardo - A still lightly raced veteran that found career best form in the autumn of 2021 where he broke the 1000m track record fresh at Randwick when upsetting Nature Strip in the Challenge Stakes before carrying top weight and bolting in with The Galaxy. Over 1000m-1100m, he's got the better of Nature Strip via their last two clashes over the short trips.

3. Classique Legend. The 2020 Everest winner returned to Australia after a short Hong Kong stint and is back under the care of trainer Les Bridge. Still very lightly raced as a six-year-old with just 14 starts to his name, he was first-up off a long break via a high pressure Everest, performing well despite racing fresh. Any return bouts in 2022 with Nature Strip will be a must watch.

4. Masked Crusader - With a William Reid Stakes romp in the autumn, prior to an eye-catching run as runner-up in the TJ Smith Stakes, much was epxected of Masked Crusader this spring, who was only a few strides off winning The Everest. Plain following that when belted by Eduardo, it's clear that riding him cold will now be the norm. Always going to need luck, but can beat any of this line-up on his day.

5. Artorius. Should in theory be well behind Home Affairs given the Coolmore Stud Stakes result, albeit the Blue Diamond winner was here, there and everywhere this spring, on a Golden Rose/Caulfield Guineas path, before coming back to 1200m to round out the prep. Very talented, albeit frustrating, the son of Flying Artie will be better served as a sprinter in the autumn. Has a lot of improvment to come.
